I'm glad you wrote about CSA's. We decided last year that for just the 2 people in our family we could never keep up with the volume of summer produce. The local farmer's market is a better fit for us, although more costly. I do grow some things as well. I think CSA's are a great idea for families with children and plenty of refrigerator and freezer space. Worthwhile to check out.

Our old fridge (RIP) was short on freezer space, but our new one has much more so maybe I'll just go to Farmer's Markets, buy those disgusting dirty green things, and freeze them for myself! What a good idea I should have had last August and September.

You, on the other hand, could consider splitting with another family or two, maybe. Did I mention that our CSA was 100% organic, and I'm not sure that is true of all F.M.

Thanks for writing - you're wiser than I am!

Thanks. Not wiser, just experienced! l.o.l. We considered splitting with another couple but still didn't want 3 tons of zuccinis coming in all at once.

Great article, Carrie - I think CSAs are terrific - but I would be the only one eating the produce. DH is strictly a meat and potatoes kind of guy. And DD eats brocoli and potatoes - and that's it for veggies.

Michaela, if only we had the distance problem solved, you and I could easily manage a quarter share together. I'm in the same boat family-wise.

Good to hear from you, my friend!

We have two CSA's in town and I don't belong to either. I am afraid I would spend my life looking up recipes for veggies that I don't know how to cook very well. I also fear the oversupply with just two of us. I grow some of my on veggies, too -- Swiss Chard, Zucchini and sometimes eggplants and peppers of various kinds. That and our excellent local farmers' market and the occasional trip to the Asian markets 100 miles from here, more than satisfy our needs.

If you can grow your own then you're already acting locally! Good work! Thanks for reading.

Oddly enough, one of the local CSA's doesn't have just local stuff. Don't know about the other. I think it is all local but doesn't deliver in the winter.

After reading Carrie's article in January I did more research on CSA and found one nearby. I signed up for a half share, could have also requested only a third. We have received three weeks of produce, very satisfied. The CSA is 100% organic. they also offered a bread share and strawberry share. Initially I thought it to be spendy but after doing some comparison with supermarket prices it wasn't much more...and it is fresh! The CSA includes a newsletter with each box explaining contents, how to use, storage and recipes. One of the things enjoyed is the variety. We would not be able to do the same through our local supermarket. This Saturday in addition to the weekly box any member and family can go to the farm and enjoy the pea pick. Pick all you want for home, see first hand the farming operation and enjoy potluck. We like our CSA.

Initially I thought I have not had roquette yet and now learn it is also known as arugula. that too was in our box this past week! Liked it.
I did also sign up for the strawberry share. Fresh picked strawberries starting this week. I am very pleased with our CSA.

Roquette or arugula is yummy! If I got that in my CSA box, I would be loyal for life. Instead I grow it.

I'm so glad to have had that positive impact - that makes ME happy! Thanks for letting me know, although of course, you're the one who did the work and took the initiative. Bravo!
