I'm taking it for granted this stuff is sold down there. I was wondering if it could be used as a base for my own salves? It has no odor. I use a lot of Vicks...could I just mix some drops of eucalyptus oil into it? The same for a heat rub...camphor oil, menthol, etc...would vaseline work as a base?
petrolium jelly makes a wonderful base. If i am in a hurry and don;t want to mess with scratch ingredients, I just add whatever I need to it to it. The only drawback is that it is a petrolium product and not as wholesome as the beeswax, vegetable oils and butters. My grandfather made all his own salves with a vasaline base, he was 95 and had beautiful skin when he died!
I would definately prefer it to most of the commercially made ones, they can contain some pretty scary things.
That's really interesting, I didn't know you could use Petroleum Jelly has a base, you live and you learn. do you have any idea where I could find a good recipe for that?
I always just made up my own, but I know I have seen some using it as a base. Maybe Google what you want like "home made vicks mentholatum" or "vicks recipie". You can only use oil based scents and additives to get it to mix. For instance, I melted the jelly, then mixed vitamin E, lanolin, lavender oil and johoba oil and whipped it with a mini hand mixer. It made a great balm to put on my face before playing outside in the cold and wind.
Vasiline does not penetrate the skin and dissapear as quickly as most natural oils and butters, I think it forms a barrier to the eliments while the other oils soaked in.
Yep, I think it would make a good base for salves like vicks, but I wouldn't use it on anything that has to be rubbed into alot of parts of the skin, as petrolium jelly Stops up the pours, it's not good to use it on your face. It will keep dirt locked inside your pours causing pimples down the road.
Is why folks use it to suffocate ticks and other buggers attached to the skin, becuase it sufficates them and they fall off.
