ok we have 2 fire places . i was told they are gas log . i basically dont even know what that means i just know we might blow up if i try to burn wood in there. they were originally wood burning . at least the one is . the 2nd fireplace was added later but it looks like there was wood burnt in there at some time . so what will it take to get them back to good ol wood burning . i know id have to call a chimney sweep because im sure there was a dead squirrel in there last year and who knows what else . weve been here for 3 yrs . the previous owners 50 yrs. nothing has been updated or done since the 80s when her dh died . will it be doable with out spending crazy amounts of money
I would assume the gas logs can be removed and the gas line capped or retrofitted into a gas starter if you'd find that handy to have. But I would guess it's a job better left to the pros rather than a DIY. A chimney inspection would be a good idea too as well as the cleaning, if they haven't updated or done anything since the 80's there's a good chance that some chimney maintenance has been neglected that may go beyond just being dirty.
