I have this light stain color that we put on the our cedar privacy fence and now want to make it alittle darker color this spring. Can I just stain over the old color or do we have to do something to the fence first???
If you want to go darker, it would probably work...depending on what type of stain you used the first time, and if you sealed it with anything afterward. IF you used a sealer, it may make it harder to add another color on top of it.
Try taking off one of the boards and do a test on it with a darker color first. If you like the result, then do the rest.
Jess, if you have a spray painter I would just add coats of the same color untill you reach the color you want. If you want a lot darker then would suggest a darker stain that should cover old nicely.
