Wow Geoff, really great article. I learned so much and it was great to look at the pictures. I don't know that I ever put Hylocereus and Epiphyllums in different categories in my head...
Really nice job explaining things, too. As a side note, is Lithops a cactus?

no, it's in a south African (primarily) family if itty bitty easy-to-rot plants called Mesembs (Aizoaceae). No relationship to cacti

Wow, your article was great!! Thanks so much for the great read! Now, I've got to process it all, and most likely will have to read over a few times! I have one Epi and one Agave if that tells you how much knowledge I have on the subject, there is just sooo much to learn. Thanks again!

Great article, Geoff.
I am a disaster with cacti, I really am, and finally have simply given up. Your article makes me want so much to start again, but any cactus that lives with me quickly meets his demise. I hate to do that to a plant.
But I want everything you have shown here...sigh...
