Here we go again... we are supposed to get down to 31º Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Highs during the days are predicted at 54º. Tuesday night will be partly cloudy and windy, so that should help keep frost away, correct?
I still haven't figured out a way to keep my palms from getting frost damage. My husband wants to run the sprinklers all night, but I don't think that's a good idea. I think we'd get more damage from the constant soaking than the freeze. Anyone ever sprinkle palms all night on cold nights?
ADONIDIA merrillii (mature to 3 ft): major foliage burn/total defoliation @ 29-27f (Orlando); killed @ 25f (Daytona)
HYOPHORBE lagenicaulis (6 ft to 3 ft): killed @ 23f (Orl.), defoliated @ 27f, Orl.;
HYOPHORBE verschaffeltii (9 ft to 3 ft): killed @ 22f (Daytona); survived defoliation @ 23f (Orl.); shows leaf burn @ 29-28f but retains some green foliage to about 26f. Much more cold hardy than the above Bottle palm
WODYETIA bifurcata (10 ft to 4 ft): small palms (under 6 ft) killed by 23f low (Orlando). Slightly larger palms barely survived the same freeze albeit totally defoliated. Foliage burn appears around 28-27f (Orl.). Not present during the great 1989 freeze, most likely would not have survived 19f lows.
Here's my yard today... crossing my fingers it stays this way! LOL
