| Ok. Last season I was soooooooooooooooo diligent about saving and fermenting tomato seeds from all the favorites I was growing. The good news is that I have 12 paper towels each FULL of an individual variety of Heirloom tomato. The bad news is that none of the paper towels is labeled -- hence, the "mystery." I can pinpoint the variety it MIGHT be, since I was only growing a few different varieties. Sooooooooooooooooooooooo, once you grow 'em we can identify 'em.
If you would like to play "Mystery 'Mater," just let me know and I'll cut you off a piece of paper towel and you can grow the seeds. Then you can let us know what it was!
The varieties I was growing were:
Black Krim
Pruden's Purple
Eva Purple Ball
Cherokee Purple
Brandy Sudduth
Arkansas Traveler
Wapsipinicon Peach

When do you usually sow seeds for tomatoes in Lansing, Ks?
Here's what's going on in my Fall/Winter garden. Don't let the pics fool you. I only have 9 EBs, 9 eBuckets, eight 24" planters, two 14" planters, and the trellis bed, which is
4-1/2' wide x 5' long. Oh, and two small raised beds 3.5' x 4' (the beet beds!). Mine is a VERY small operation -- the pics are just a relative sampling of the few things growing there. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Gymgirl~Very nice garden! I like to start my tomatoes indoors in the sunroom, as I grow them in containers..I just have not had any luck growing them otherwise, no matter where we lived. Except once, and that was due to me being adopted by a master gardener. It was really mutually beneficial, she wanted the cherries and berries growing in our yard so...she helped me grow a luscious vegetable and flower garden. |

| Wow Gymgirl,
I'm new to gardening, but have a burning desire to grow tomatoes! I didn't have great success last year, but it was so danged hot in Texas at the time. Is it possible for me to get a few seeds from you as well? I don't have any exotic tomato varieties to offer in return; I do have nasturtium and pot marigold seeds. I'm working on making an herb/tea garden, so I've got a variety of seeds for that purpose. Please feel free to let me know if any of that interests you.
Oh wow! Just looked at your trade list. I actually have seeds for a short carrot. The Parisian carrot to be exact. Would you like some? |
Gymgirl SE Houston (Hobby), TX (Zone 9a)

| Opaquedream,
I'll add you to the list. Send your addy in a d-mail. And, if you don't mind I would like to try your carrot variety. Would you please send me some seeds to sow, and some marigolds, too?
Garden6,
If your offer is still open, I would like some of your marigold seeds, too. After careful thought regarding my Spring/Summer garden, I have decided I like the Fall garden the best. To that end, I'm only concentrating on my tomatoes right now. When it gets hot enough, I'll sow okra, cowpeas, and the watermelon. I'm not up to fighting the heat and the mosquitoes (which wreak havoc on my allergic reaction to them).
So, I've decided to use this time to clean up all my areas while my maters are growing. Since we have soooooooooo much greenery in the yard and no color, I'll sow your seeds for the marigolds and cover the planters over with cellaphane. I'll turn 'em into mini-greenhouses, and they should take off faster than last time. I've learned it's better for me to direct sow and then thin, so that's my plan for color on the patio, and strategically placed in the existing greenery.
Your seeds will be that color! And, I'll be sure to post before and after pics so you can see your plants from afar!
Thanks in advance.

I'm from the Big Easy, right around the corner from ya'll. Did ya'll have a Mardi Gras? I haven't been home since last November, but I sure wanna go get a good hot sausage or oyster po'boy, DRESSED, from Felix's or Acme.
I had one right off the plane at Acme in Metarie in November, and I almost killed myself! I was born and lived in New Orleans for 25 years of my life -- and I NEVER tasted so great an oyster po'boy as that night last November!
I gotta start playing the tourist in Houston now, to see what I'm missing before I die here!

There is nothing like the food here I agree and there is nothing like a good tomato grown in this soil.

| Gymgirl. TMaple wrote earlier about ice fishing and beer freezing after you open it. I understand the Texas style ice fishing it's a southern thing. Give a man a fish and he will eat one day. Teach a man to to fish and he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer. I'm having a little humor. Still 12 towles 7 different plant seeds , this hast to be a trick question. I have realy enjoyed reading the seed swaping and mystery seed fourm. I too was a victem of unknown seeds from dad. His was a way easyer choice, only two kinds to pick from. Purple pervian chillie peppers they were. They ward off colds, make real fine pepper sauce, and are so good looking I'm planting them outside my picket fence this year. I would be pleased to send you some seeds in about 6 weeks. I sent some seeds to Tenn. last year and the pepper sause makes a good Christmass stocking stuffer. Thanks again for the good work and humor. |

| Crazyfish3! Sure I'd like some hot pepper seeds, but you've got to send me the hot pepper sauce recipe, too. We drink Louisiana Red Hot sauce for breakfast at my house.

| Tomatoluv! It was a giveaway I was offering to anyone wanting to try 'em. Since I was sending mystery maters the same time I was mailing seeds, I sent you some to try if you'd like to. You can read the beginning post below.

| I love this thread. We put in a school veggie garden at my son's elemenatry school this spring and it seems we're playing "mystery maters" with our pepper starts :) While repotting with first through third grades, the plant labels just didn't make it on the plants. It's all good! The kids are excited to solve the mystery. |

| Gymgirl,
it was no problem. I would not have thought it strange if they had arrived at the same time as the Mystery Maters. But his envelope from you came yesterday and the MM seeds came months ago.. Believe me I am not complaining at all. SEND ME ALL THE SEEDS YOU WANT :-)
Thanks again and I will go read up on these seeds.

| Our first frost is usually mid December. You think I go time to try one? I have room. Maybe I could send you some seeds in the fall from something I`m growing.

| Gymgirl~ sorry to report that only 2 mystery #1 germinated then was eaten by a pesky rabbit, none of mystery #2 nor "Pruden's purple???" germinated. It was fun just the same...always anticipating the first delicious bite of a home grown tomato is worth the effort. Thanks again for the seeds and letting me play. |

| Several weeks ago, I dug and moved to one bed all the volunteer tomato plants. I'm happy to report that one of them gave me a juicy ripe cherry tomato this past week.
Most of the plants are short and have thick stems - probably offspring from the "Patio Princess" I grew last year - these have lots of flowers, but no fruit set as yet. |

| Mine are growing...started them VERY late from seed in Michigan but I have good soil and full sun. Problem is, we haven't had but a few days over 90 degrees and everything else has been high 70's, low 80's. Very unlike our usual summer. I will post when I have something to post :)) |

| Do you still have any of those seeds left? I am taking a bio course this semester and that could make a great project. |
