Jill, I also love petunias and have lots every year in my window boxes. Thanks for such a beautiful and cheerful article!

Thanks! I'm glad you had fun with the article, too.

Onewish, I'm continually amazed at the range of colors that can be found. Your photos are stunning! Lately, I've been especially taken with the blooms that have darker veining in them, but -- wow -- your red and white one is a traffic stopper!

Well, maybe I'll luck out and that pink one will be part of my 'Cascade Double Mix'. :-)

Thanks, Janet! While you can certainly find a good variety at garden centers these days, growing from seed lets you choose from an even bigger variety. I don't think I actually spend any less by growing from seed, LOL, but I sure end up with a lot more plants for my $. :-)

Hi. Critter. Thanks for the article! It reminded me of what needs to be on my list this year. =) I always loved the double blooming varieties myself. No one may believe this, but my Mom, who lived in the Atlanta area and had semi mild winters, had petunias that came back each year.

She retrieved a dead basket from a neighbor's trash pile and babied it that first year and the next year the plants in that momma pot were so thick it was unbelievable. They even came back after they moved here to Tn, but I'm not sure about this last year.

Sometimes these plants surprise us.

You're right, gardening is full of surprises! I'm growing doubles again this year, also. :-)

Iris, spring sure does feel closer when I have little seedlings starting to sprout under the lights... I'd better get busy.

Great article Jan. Who can resist the spicy scent of petunias in the evening. I've been trying to get those PW callibrichoa (sp?) for years. I never get to the garden center soon enough. Pam

LOL, I know what you mean, I always wait too long for those, too! And I don't think I've ever seen seeds... if I ever do get one, I'll have to try to overwinter cuttings for the following year!

Great Article!!

Petunias are one of my most favorite annuals. I start hundreds from seed and put them everywhere. I'm a terrible dead-header, so the new hybrids such as Waves & Supertunias are the best for me. Here's a pic of Supertunia Vista Fuschia. This year I am trying some doubles as well. Are they more shade tolerant than other petunias. I had window boxes made for all my window this fall. Next spring they will be full of petunias. I'm also planning another new seed for me Oprea Supreme Pink Morn. I usually try a Wave mix, Wave Blue (favorite), Shockwave, Avalanche & Ramblin' What ever doesn't fit in my garden ends up in Family & Friends' gardens.

Wow! Sounds like you "do" petunias the way I do basils! I'm with you on the (not) deadheading... the new self-cleaning hybrids are wonderful!

My doubles were pretty much in full sun all day (might have had a bit of partial afternoon shade from my little crepe myrtle), so I can't comment on their shade tolerance.

I can't wait to see photos of your summer window boxes!!

Nanniepb,

I have bought my petunia seeds from Stokes the last few years. The picture is of Supertunia Vista Fuschia which is only available in plant form - no seeds. The Blue Wave are my favorite. I usually plant them with white Bacopa for a nice combo.

Pretty! I saw the Bacopa in a catalog but decided I'd bought enough seeds to fill my planters (and then some) this year... next year! :-)

LOL

You wouldn't call it restraint if you could see my seed stash...

One of the "fillers" I'm trying this year from seed is Sanvitalia (creeping zinnia)... little yellow blooms on a low, spreading plant.

Petunias are the best! I've loved them ever since I was a kid. I know that they're sort of out of favor, but I would never be without them. One question, though--does it seem that their fragrance is being sacrificed in the new hybrids?

Tufe, fragrance definitely varies. I didn't think the 'Wave' petunias had much scent, which was actually fine with me as I don't always love the smell of petunias. But I think the Cascade Doubles are new, also, and the blue one I grew last year was sweetly fragranced.

I love petunias! I'm generally not fond of the scent, so I'm glad you mentioned that at least one variety had a nice scent ... mmm, jellybeans!

I had no idea that petunias were out of fashion ... well, that suits me, I suppose, I've never cared much for fashion ... just looking good. Petunias certainly do that!

With all the new hybrids, I think petunias might be coming back into fashion, but I still hear people say, dismissively, "oh, petunias." I think that should be "Oooh! Petunias!!"
