I am just like your cousin. I must have Petunias in my garden every year. I found some wonderfully fragrant ones at Wal Mart a couple of summers ago. The corner of my garden where those Petunias hung from a sherpherd's hook smelled so good! I haven't been able to find them since but I keep looking. Right now I have my hanging basket of Petunias from last summer in the basement. They are not blooming and are a little bit leggy. I am hoping they will survive for Summer 2009. If not, oh well. I enjoyed them while I had them and I will just buy more anyway :)
I've never tried overwintering them... even if they don't start right up again, maybe you can take cuttings from them. Let me know how they do!
I hope you'll consider subscribing, especially since I think you'd love the MidAtlantic forum... and it sounds like you'd have fun with the Fragrant Gardening forum, also! :-)
