When I was a teen, I lived in the projects and there was a grandfatherly double amputee who had beautiful flowers growing across the front of their apartment. He amazed and inspired me, moving around on the ground, tanned from the sun, tending his flowers, his wheelchair there in the yard. I often stopped in to visit him and his wife as the only family I had was my mom and brothers.
Thanks for reminding me of that lovely gentleman.
Your old gentleman sounds something like the fellow who lived in our house before we did. He was also a double amputee, a veteran of the Korean War, and allegedly had a beautiful perennial border which he used to tend out of his wheelchair! The house passed through several NON-gardening owners before it got to us, so all that was left were a few tall white phlox and many overgrown forsythia bushes.
Thank you for writing! I have written other articles, too, but I am glad you found this one.
