I'm thinking of starting seeds by winter sowing, (putting covered containers outside with seeds during the winter) instead of having flats all over the house for months.

Has anyone out there tried it?

I live in St Paul, MN .

Have a look at this one http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/coldsow/all/
There is a lot of information about winter sowing, also in your zone.

I highly recommend it, textilis. I've been wintersowing for a couple of years now. I have much better luck than trying to start seeds indoors.

There's an article on winter sowing in this month's Garden and Greenhouse magazine. http://www.gardenandgreenhouse.net/cms/ The magazine is sent out free of charge to those who wish to subscribe, and has some pretty good articles.

I do like it too. It saves so much work. But I did appreciate the comments on cleaning the containers well and putting labels inside after my first season :)
