| I have a stack of wood in need of splitting with no mechanical splitter handy.
I saw this in a Lehmans catalogue and said for that price, I'd give it a try.
The first piece I tried was dried oak. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| The premise of this grenade is it won't get stuck as wedges do.
Amazing how easily it split with one swing from the maul.
I am impressed with the lack of effort on dry wood.

| The only thing I am not crazy about, it is imported. But, these days ~ what isn't? http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemI... |

| Sometimes there's no getting around the import thing. We have to do what we have to do and as frugally as we can.
Especially in this economy, I'd love to do what the government says and "buy Canadian"...but when I look at the $75 dollar tag on a made in Canada shirt compared to a $10 tag on a made in wherever shirt, I have to go with the cheapest...there's $65 dollars I can use for food, or heat or gas or electric... |

| Yes ~ sadly the US prices (and quality) go the same way. And money being what it is these days ~ grrrrr! Think I'll go split more firewood and save the heating costs. We heat with propane and supplement with wood. Last I checked, the price of this grenade will buy less than 5 gallons of propane. That is not too much warm.
Our two fireplaces are small so the wood needs splitting to fit well. |

| I'd love to heat with wood but Mom is allergic to wood smoke. People I've spoken to that have to buy the wood say they don't really save much. The best savings I have learned come from pellet stoves. |

| My MN brother has one of those wood furnaces that is removed from the house. It has radiant water heat piped to his house and is toasty warm and quiet. I love that system. He lets the tree trimming services dump at his place and he cuts into large usable chunks to feed the firebox. If the temps are around 30°, he fills it once a day. When they drop below 30°, he will feed it am and pm. The smoke would not present a problem in that situation unless your Mom were outside and although the furnace was costly, he said it paid for itself in two hard winters there. I am sure if he had to buy the wood, it would be a different story.
I keep thinking how great that furnace system would work in a greenhouse and how safe it would be to prevent house fires. |

| I've seen those systems! What a great invention they are. I am positive they have prevented many a house fire. Never thought about the use for a greenhouse, nice idea there! |

| We use one of those doodads and they work great. You can get them at Lowes or Walmart, a lot cheaper than Lehman's I'll bet.
Whoever told you wood costs more than running a pellet stove must be living in a treeless desert with free electricity.
I think the wood furnaces are great. I'd love to have one but we have no ductwork in this old house so it's not practical for me. |

| Woops... I had not looked at Lowes but never saw one at WMart. Perhaps because I am in a warmer zone. Thanks for the info. |

| we bought one from Lehmans. DH used it with the splittin maul, and hated it.
I think I can use it with quartered wood and a small hammer to make firestarter
pieces. Of course, my DH would get it stuck in these honkin big logs. What
a pain in the patootie it was for him. I think, with a smaller log, not a 16" one,
maybe the grenade would work better.

| I did get it stuck once and it WAS a booger to unstick. LOL
Otherwise, two of us have used it with success. I agree, probably smaller wood and likely really dry works far better.
Sorry for the disappointment... |
