| He is coming along slow. But starting to show potential. The snake is 6 foot 6 inches long with a 10 1/2 inch circumfrence. Im looking for a hot glass artist to build me the rattle. Im going to make a tounge out of hot glue. The head will be last as it will be the most dificult part. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Ive struck out on finding someone to make me the rattle. Ive asked 1/2 dozen people but no one has shown any intrest and I dont have nor know how to use a kiln. So It wont look great but Im going to shape a rattle out of styrofoam and mosaic it with the smallest pices of glass I can cut. Iam building a base and backgound out of styrofaom that will look like a rocky ledge. Ive sanded the pieces down to look like rock and its looking pretty good. I will mosaic the rocks in shades of greys. |

| There are a couple of people in the new forum that make glass objects, high fire and warm glass, perhaps they can try... they are pretty good at slumping and fusing.
I've got a couple of kilns ( a small one for jewelery and a big one for pottery), but, I don't know how to use them either. I'm going to start practicing on the small kiln making a couple of pendants and see what I can do, but, don't plan on using it for a week or so.. I need a few more supplies. |

| i've got an idea that may work. What if you glue pieces of glass (alreay cut the size you want) and layer them, then use the grinder to shape the rattles, one at a time.. If I get back in time tonight, I'll draw a photo of what I am talking about. You can use that beige glass that looks almost like an ivory color. Cut it into thin strips and glue two or more together. It is a big snake so you need a long rattle. each rattle is a year, so I don't know how many you need. |

| WHat about lampwork? The rattles could be made on a mandrel. How big would they have to be and what color? |

| About 5 inches tall and 3/4 inches wide at the base. Maybe 8 or 9 segments. Each segment looks like a figure 8 from the top. You can see some great timber rattlesnake pictures by searching timber rattlers on FLICKR. I think I figured a wy out. By stcking figure 8 piecs one on top of another and grinding every pair seperatly I will get arealicstic rattle. The problem doing it that way is the sides will be ground and dull and I dont have diamond polisher. So I am going to dip the completed rattle into epoxy resin to make it gleam like a real rattle. |

| oooh that sounds perfect to me... you could also use some of that pour on, I wonder how long that would last. I'm sure a very long time. I have a table made for me in South America and they used pour-on on the top, it was made in 1988 and it has been used continuously, it is a little dull, but not as much as you would think.
Yes, layering the way you mentioned will work. There is a glue that is supposed to dry clear for glass, I have some, but, haven't tried it out yet E-6000. Epoxy might be better.
I also thought about a bead maker with one of those rods. If you could find a glass bead to match your glass at the end it may be something to think about too. Good luck and will wait for your photos.. I'm sure it will come out great, your work always does. |

| Sorry, I finsished it in the spring and took it to the PA state Taxidermy ascociation show which has an art division. I was disapointed in that it took second place and got beat by a tiny wood carving. But, Find me a art judge who knows anything about Mosaics. Anyway won of the attendees at the show had to have it and got in my face and asked "how much" I never sold anything before so just uttered $600 and she paid me in a second. | I used a polyethelen taxidermy form. The tongue is hot glue from a glue gun painted black with nail polish. |
