I have a couple of questions about repotting my Brassavola nodosa x Epidendrum stamfordianum. I have it now in the container it came to me in, which is a 3-4" wooden basket. It has grown quite a lot, and the growing media has broken down to almost nothing, so I thought I should do something about it. I got a little ceramic orchid pot (the kind with holes all over the sides and bottom) and thought I could just take the orchid out of the basket, clean it up, and repot it in the ceramic pot. However, when I started trying to remove it from the basket I found that the roots seemed fused to the basket and the ones I tried to gently remove just broke!
So, should I just put the small basket in a bigger basket and let it grow into that one? I've heard that people do this, but then you never get to clean the old media off the roots and check for rotting roots or other problems...
Another question about this orchid...since its a cross between Brassavola and Epidendrum, which type of growing media should I use if I were to completely repot? (I don't see how I could completely repot, but I'm just curious about this). I looked up the suggested media for each and they are different...Brassavola likes something more coarse like bark and Epi prefers finer bark or moss.
