A garden show recently discussed putting asters in pots and then only putting them in the garden during their bloom time. I'm going to do that this year.

I wondered if you had any experience overwintering these potted and above ground, or partially submerged, outside in zone 5a or cooler--
I wouldn't be watering these over winter but we do get rain and snow and it's possible there might be standing water on the tops of the pots when it's frozen underneath but thawed on top. To avoid this I'd fill them to the rim with soil, but it might settle. We average 40 inches of rain per year. Lows to -20. Snow cover is inconsistent. We are very windy.
Ok- a penny for your thoughts on these...

ligularia,
garden mum
artemisia 'silver mound' foliage gets ratty mid summer-
heliopsis 'summer night' or 'lorraine sunshine'
lilies- oriental, OT, asiatic, oriental, regal, henryi
pulsatilla
lily of teh valley
campanula bellflower glomerata
siberian iris
shrub- salix- curly willow
shrub- ribes odoratum
rudbeckia goldstrum
veronica 'sunny border blue',
salvia 'may night'
oriental poppy

thx for sharing your garden knowledge!
Karen
