Without our esteemed vet I would never know there was a difference in a cycad and a cactus.
Speaking of, I have a beautiful Sago that I inherited last year. I has about 6 "rounds". Sorry, I don't know how to describe. About a month ago it and everything else was covered in ICE. Lasted about a day. Now it looks very much like the variegated above. What now?

nothing to do... leaves may eventually dry and die.. you can cut them off if you don't like the look of them. Plant will probably still be fine, though

Great article on Dioons, PalmBob. I have always been fascinated by these plants, but have only grown one D. edule many years ago. Fell in love with huge old Sagos while living in coastal GA. Even brought some seedlings from very old Savannah Sagos when we moved to NM. The seedlings have done quite well here in pots..protected on porches. Do you think any of Dioons described in your article might have a chance of surviving in southern NM? We are hot, extremely dry, but often drop to 18-27 degrees in winter. Winters tend to be more uniform here, as opposed to GA (more chill hours, even if not excessively cold). Do you also have any recommendations for good mail order sources for Dioons...Randi

There are several mail order sources for them in the Garden Watchdog of Davesgarden. I think your Dioons would have a bit of trouble with the below 20F days, but no problems with the higher temps.

Sorry...PalmBob...I should have explained more in my initial question. My listed temps were "night lows", as the temps always drop significantly in the high desert (we are just over 4 thousand feet above Sea Level), after the sun retires. A large drop always occurs in summer/fall too, making us far from "tropical". We always have the temperature extremes, and low humidity. Winter daytime temps are much warmer, ..usually 50 to 70, or higher, depending on what cold front moves through. Thanks, for the advice to search Garden Watchdog. Hoping to find seedlings, rather than begin from seed. My Sagos were a great success...nearly 100 % from seed, because I had fresh seed that I had collected meself. Thanks again, for your feedback...Randi
