Many thanks for this article that helps to cut through the health-food store hype. They just don't have the same 'superfood' mystique when you call them wolfberries... But it's also good to know there's some truth in the health benefit claims.
I'm trying to learn more about traditional medicines and really hadn't looked into goji berries yet, so I'm grateful for this report. The more I learn about food and its medicinal properties, the more I believe the best source of "health food" is your own garden or local farmers' market.
Three cheers for supporting your local farmers' market :))) I also believe your own garden is an excellent source of 'health food'. And being a former health food store/restaurant owner, I have to also say, "so is your local health food store." {{{smile}}}
Thank you for posting your comments. Keep an eye out for my article on Acai Berry, coming next month. That is another very promising 'superfruit'.
Diana, This is a very timely and interesting article. I agree with the children's assessment that they taste pretty bland, and they are hard as a pebble too. They are also quite expensive. I hope DG readers start growing them so we can find out how they taste fresh.
Thanks Diana, and my apologies -- I totally get the message about the health food stores. I'm one of the local one's best customers because of my grandmother's many ailments and the benefits I believe she has enjoyed because of the products I've brought home from there. So far, she's survived for about the last 16 months without the doctor's "permission." I guess I was just carping about the high cost of the stuff you get there, but all in all I suppose it IS still a whole lot cheaper than any of the alternatives. :-) I just need to get better at growing some of our own health foods...
Best wishes to you in return,
Mac
Mac, no need to apologize - I understood what you meant, and all the best to your grandmother
Hi Pam, we had company last night and our friend commented that she thought the dried goji berries had a fresh, grass-like taste. Not a very appetizing description! I can't wait to taste or hear comments on fresh berries too.
