Don't feel like spring is close here.
10 going for a balmy 20 today.
Ground is snow covered.
New week, new challenges!
Pullets are beginning to lay. Not to smart at the moment. Seem to have problem figuring where they should be laying the eggs. I built a new nesting box, but they would rather use it for a house than a nest.
I will build another one this week. It will give them 36 choices of where to lay their egg.
125 pullets, so that should be enough room.
Tomorrow we will take the cabinets to the flip house.

This is the gun cabinet I offered for sale at the flea market. I have 3 positive possibilities from it.

That Camellia is gorgeous, Sharon! I like the dining room window, too. The yard... well, it leaves lots of scope for imagination. ;-)

That amaryllis is beautiful, Adina!! I need to get some of those... Hopefully this year, so they'll bloom next year.

Hmm... My DH left the work laptop here. Normally I would take it to him, but I have to be at church at 8:45 and I don't have time to go to his work (15 miles east of here, through icky rush hour traffic) and then all the way back to church (11 miles west of here). Rats. I tried calling him, but he didn't turn his cell phone on this morning.

Casn you believe the owner paid a guy $125/mo to take care of the lawn? Looks really bad.

The lawn has potential. I want to clear out the pine straw and put mulch in. Pine straw is too volatile for my taste (it burns easily besides that I think it's just plain old ugly). I want to put a daylily bed around one of the trees in the front.

There is more I want to do and I'll figure it all out when we move in. I've got work to do, but it's going to look nice when I'm done :)

Busy, Busy, Busy!
We thought we were going up to Dayton to do a one weekend kitchen demo and remodel this weekend.
Just a down and dirty... make it look OK for a buyer type deal.
So we'd loaded up about every DIY tool we had...
Robyn's parent's house and we knew from it's age and the market there a great job wasn't needed.
It will 99% surely be turned into a rental.
They'll gut it and remake... we just wanted to get it in better structual shape.
Well two prospective buyers said stop all work.
They will both be bidding as is... we'll see... so all our tools and stuff go back to the garage...lol!

Anyway... 61F here today... 65 tomorrow... maybe a dip back to 30's high Sun and Mon.
But it appears we have turned the corner tempwise.

Sharon that house is perfect... and that yard... not so much.
I can see you'll have fun gardening there!!!

Kelli it's great to see SO many blooms!

Kiska Welcome Back!

Celia glad Isis is doing so well!

ric~you are certainly busy, busy. The wide temp range keeps you guessing as to what to wear; layers, I'm sure:)
Music2Keep~love your snowy bird feeder pic. Guess I've overlooked what it is that you're studying; good luck on the test.
MySharona; it's going to be a beautiful yard when you've got it shape again.
CG~have a good day, too.

Hi everyone!

I've lost 2 or 3 threads so I'm waaaay too far behind to catch up. I've been busy with a new website I opened in early February. It's taken up all my computer time for the past weeks ... you can check it out here: http://www.gardaflora.is/ , (means garden flora) it's all in Icelandic but the photos (and latin names) are a universal language ;-) lol "Fjoaerar" means perennial plants, the A-Z is latin names, "rosalisti" is the roselist.

Sharon - love your new house! Can you do whatever you want with the yard, even though it's rented?? Soooooo much potential there! :-)

We had snow, sun, fairly calm weather and temps in the 20's for about two weeks in early February, then the snow melted and it's been mostly windy and wet. Frost last night. Today it's cloudy, breezy and 28F. Storm warning in effect for tonight. We have one more month to go before we can celebrate spring ... I'm sooooo ready for it! lol
Love the added daylight we're enjoying now, we have dim daylight before 9 am and it doesn't get dark until around 7 pm :-) Which means the Christmas light decorations are finally down. People were encouraged to keep the clear lights up longer ... I've never kept them up this long, but we somehow needed some light in all this darkness this year ... a lot of people did the same thing. They're starting to come down now, but there are still a few that are still up.

I've been reading the girls an interesting bedtime book for the past week. It's a true story about a girl and her family who had to evacuate their home (along with everyone else on the island) in the volcanic eruption in the Westman Islands off the south coast of Iceland in 1973. The girl and 3 of her siblings got lost in the evacuation and it took 2 days for the family to be reunited. The girls loved the story. There were no casualties in the eruption, by some incredible devine intervention all the fishing boats were docked because of a sudden storm the night before so they managed to evacuate everyone very quickly. Here's a link to more information on the eruption: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eldfell

Ash Wednesday is our version of Halloween, the kids dress up in costumes and sing for treats in stores and other businesses. The singing for treats is a relatively new custom and no doubt an adoptation from Halloween. Selma went with her friend "down town" to sing for treats after school and had a great time. It was a short school day, they had a costume dance and went home at 11 am.

The website is still taking up most of my time, but I'll try to check in once in a while.

The girls in their costumes, last night.

Hope you all have a good day!

I'm way behind too--been getting acquainted over on Facebook and uploading photos there which has taken a lot of my time.
Can't comment on everything but all the photos are great!
Sharon: very nice house but you do have your work cut out for you on that yard!! I'm confident you are up to the challenge, though! Need any plants? Ask and you shall receive. I have my house for sale and I plan on taking some of my plants with me when I move--might as well dig up some for you, too. :o))
Welcome back, Kiska and Rann! We miss you when you are away.
Rann, I'll try to check out your website a little later.
We have had a couple of days of really nice spring weather if you don't count the clouds--been threatening rain for two days but only a threat so far. Also, it has been rather windy today and the high temp has been in the mid-70's. The flowering plums and pears are already blooming much to my surprise. The chrysanthemums are sprouting up from the ground already. The roses and just lots of other stuff are budding out. The plants are definitely thinking it is spring--I hope we don't have a late frost that kills everything. We had two snows in March of last year and a late freeze in April! :o(( I have spent several hours outside lately cleaning up and getting things ready for spring. It's been good to have my hands in the good earth once again!

Sorry you're having to sell your house, Mau, or is this something you had planned anyway? The spring-like weather is here, too. I have windows in the house open.

Last fall, I planted new 5 new peonies. I peeked under the mulch today and they're starting to come up! LOL I'm very excited! I, very carefully, re-covered them.

Celia, Pau and I had the house for sale before he died--we had planned on moving to NW AR. Afterwards I took it off the market for a few weeks because I wasn't up to strangers coming through my house, etc. I put it back on the market around the first of Feb. I am planning to move to Harrison, AR to be with my daughter and her family.

Celia Is that really Darrells Corsair? Thats a funny picture! Yes it is a screened in porch YAY!
Mau I was going to ask if you were moving closer to your daughter and you already answered LOL! Ill let you know about the plant situation. I have itchy fingers LOL! The owner is coming in this weekend to take care of some issues. Well be able to start moving stuff in after she leaves.

I got food poisoning yesterday. I feel really tired today. I don't think I'm sick, just that a fairly strenuous hike and food poisoning in one day was a bit much.

Some more pictures from yesterday - The trees in the foreground are not completely dead. They are citrus trees that survived a fire and are growing back from the base, which will not have the same fruit as the graft on top, which looks to be dead. I don't know anything about the history of this place but there a number of rough-looking citrus trees and avocado trees around the place.

Kelli, you are right, the machine is upside down.
It is called a dump rake. It was pulled by horses. It raked up the hay & when it was full, the driver could step on a peddle & the tines would raise up & let the hay out. A good operator would have a nice row of hay across the field.
We had one when I grew up. We mostly used it to rake up the hay on the roadsides.

Getting colder tonight. My thermometer batteries must be dead, I am not getting a reading.
I think it's around 15.

Celia Give Monty some hugs and loves from Auntie Sharon. He should do well on meds. You may want to post on the Pets thread. Someone will have knowledge there.

Good Luck Monty!

Well we got whacked by that T-Storm last night.
About 4 AM I awoke to a freight train noise.
Being an old tornado alley resident I hit the radar.

Just a T-Storm and in fact the freight train noise I heard was water.
Thunder and a deluge... 1" of rain in less than an hour.
Very little wind.
By 5 it had moved mostly thru... by the time I left for work it was clearing.
Temps have gone from 55 when I got up to 46 now.
Should be 42 by the time I leave work.
That will be the high for the next 3 days.
Then back to near 60 Sunday a week.

When it was time to take the grandkids home, they saw we didn't have sore throats and sinus, so they gave us some. I'm still mending.

I did read everything tho.

Sharon, I'm glad you get a new house and yard! I'd be so happy to get away from the neighbor too. Gary is looking well!

Kelli, nice to see flowers.

Rann, love the website and the girls are so beautiful in their costumes! I can't believe how quickly they change in between the pictures you post

Marsue, it's so nice to know you can move, but we'll never lose track of you on Dave's.

Kelli, you have my sympathy. I'll bet you felt worse than me. Nice pictures. Love the hairpin curve. I can see you rounding it :o)

Pepper, Kwanjin, beautiful color in your pictures!

Sorry to not get to everyone. I'm still a little dull headed.

It's breezy, partly sunny and cold. The thermometer is way out in the kitchen and I forgot to look before I got in here.

My Dad found this. It was in my Mom's drawer. There are two pictures to the whole thing. I'm on dial up, so it will take minutes!

Thanks for your concern, everyone. I'm feeling all right now. I get over that pretty fast. Sinus infections are the thing that gives me a lot of trouble.

Interesting about the dump rake. I wouldn't have guessed that it was old enough to have been pulled by horses.

The rock is sandstone. I know all of the flowers because I used to have an obsession to know what everything was - plants, birds, insects, rocks, tidepool stuff - you name it.

Some more of those rocks - I found out a little more about the area. The last private owner bought the land after WWII and raised cattle (no big surprise there - every square inch of ground out here was a cattle ranch at one time or another). The orange and avocado trees were planted in 1981. The land was aquired as park land in 1990.

Kiska: the Bottle Blooms are certainly different! How did the bottles get "fused"?
Rann: very nice website--lovely flowers and your girls are beautiful as usual.
Kelli: I'm glad you are feeling better. Neat hiking pics. That hairpin turn reminds me of several of the ones going up Beartooth Mountain in Montana(or is it Wyoming?) The elevation up there is 12000+ feet!
Celia: Poor Monty--keep us posted on how he is doing.
Pepper: pretty yellow flowers.
Ric: so glad it wasn't a tornado. sounds like you are having yo-yo weather, too. It was 60 on my back porch at 6 a.m. today and now it is 51 and continuing to fall. High tomorrow to be in the mid 40's! :o(( low to be 28 on Sunday night.!!
Adina: Yes, I am looking forward to selling my house and moving close to my daughter. Your puppy looks like a little bear cub--LOL!
BP: hope you are feeling better. Those are some really cute little "people". I know you will treasure them! I might be moving but I am definitely not leaving DG!
Sharon: You are really gong to enjoy your "new" house! I can hardly wait to see photos of your furniture in it and also see what you do with that yard!

It's been getting colder all day. After 74F yesterday for a high, I am not looking forward to highs in the mid-40's the next couple of days! Currently 51 and the temp is falling. It was raining a bit earlier but has stopped now. Wind is blowing.

It's been a while since I've seen one but a loquat seems right to me too.
We had one when I lived in FL.
The fruit will be a while ripening if memory serves.
Our FPR started out looking like your FL Room.

Adina that's some wild looking feet on that puppy.
Almost like Bear Paws!

Kelli where's that hair pin?
It looks familiar.

Cool and cloudy here... temp still dropping.

Sharon, I have the impression that loquats are more familiar to Asian people than to "Anglos" like us. It's been a long time since I've had one, but as I recall, the fruits are no more than 2 inche long, are a little bit fuzzy, have a big seed inside, and taste kind of like pears. They are no relation at all to kumquats.

Ric, the hairpin turn is on Black Canyon Road, south of Simi Valley. I'd be surprised if you have been there.

I don't think we were on that road but we were all over that area.
I thought it looked very familiar.
The Reagan was our Hwy of choice going to the 101.
Malibu Canyon Road I remember well and we got some great shots on it and Mulholland.
If it said canyon we drove it! LOL!

Sharon, sorry I haven't said much about our new house. Slow brain, but better today! I think it's wonderful! So much to do to make it your own. Yayyy on the chairs, and a screened in porch is a must! We call our's the side porch :o)

Pepper, the weather liars admitted we wouldn't get snow and we didn't!

Rusty, I love the silk shirt! I have a coat with a tiger across the back that my Dad sent back from Japan. I wore it thru high school because no one else had anything like it. I hope you wear yours! Your shelves look perfect!

22 about 5inches new snow overnight. Sunrise was 7:59 but with cloud cover, never noticed it.
kwanjin~wow, that's a great photo.
Rusty~love the shirt, too. The closet colors are wonderful.
marsue~for the bottles, I just put them in the kiln, with a narrow piece of glass inserted to be the "straw" in the Coke bottle, and did a full fuse. It's fun fusing bottles of all kinds; the kiln is busy while I'm busy working on a different piece of glass.
bp~I only imagine how pretty that tiger shirt must have been.

Enjoy the fresh snowfall, pepper.

Here's the Porcelain tile we picked for the Kitchen and Hall.

We lucked out on the Travertine it was marked down 30% to $2.49/sq ft.
Lucked out again when I called our neighbor to see if we could borrow his rig to transport the stone.
He said his trailer was already hooked up, he didn't have anything going on...would we like him to come over to the store?
(We figured it was going to be mid-week before we could get back.)
He showed up about 25 minutes later.
SO they skidded up the Trav and the Tile and we just plopped it on the trailer.
When we got it home another neighbor dropped by and helped unload.
W/ the 4 of us it took minutes.
We offered to pay him...he refused...said when he does his tile we can teach him the ropes.
Done Deal!

Kelli Thank you for the ID, you are right! They are indigenous to China (per Wiki). Seems to me your knowledge of plants is endless!
Rusty The shelves look great! I love the jacket. Its very pretty and a nice keepsake.
Sally Youre too funny! Im so excited about the move. I will miss our nice neighbors terribly, but well only be 4 miles away. Do you still have the jacket like Rustys?
Celia That is an awesome picture! Congrats on the capture!
Kiska Technically 4/1 is the move date, but once the owner leaves and the house is pro cleaned well be able to start shifting items over. Luckily we wont have to do it all in 1 or 2 days. Love the meadow!
Ric OMG travertine is my favorite tile! I love the colors and texture of it. Each tile is slightly different and what a great price you got! Its FATE you were meant to have that tile LOL!

Lake Wind Advisory in effect until 10 PM EST this evening...

Tonight
Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening...then numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms after midnight. Some storms may be severe after midnight. Low 52. Southwest winds 20 mph. Gusts up to 30mph early in the evening. Chance of rain 70%.

Our high today was 77. It was a picture perfect day to have the yard sale. Not too hot, too cool or too windy and no humidity. Lots of people showed up and we sold a lot of little stuff. It's great to get little cluttery things out of the house. There will be one final yard sale then we will be done.

The street we are moving on is just off the one that has the peacocks (but on the opposite end of the street). Ive been seeing them (18 at last count) quite a bit lately, seems they prefer mid morning and early evening hours.

Big fire in Lewisville this afternoon. The old grocery store that is now a cabinet shop burned to the ground. (Not mine). Apparently a propane tank exploded too. Don't know much else about it, except fire departments from lots of neighboring towns came to help. Don't think there was any injuries.
Nice weather predicted for this week. We need it.

Thanks, everybody, for the compliments on the moon pic. Sometimes even dummies get lucky! LOL

Ric: so, so sorry to hear about Weeingreens' husband. I have posted a message to her on that other thread. Thanks for letting us know about it.
Pepper: you are actually happy about new snow?
Sharon: hooray for the chairs! It's so nice that you will be able to move at a more leisurely pace rather than have to do it all in one day. I don't believe that I have ever heard of a loquat but it's nice that Kelli ID'd it for you. What a lovely peacock!
Kiska: when I first glanced at your post I thought you said you had 22 inches of new snow! LOL and Yikes!! Thankfully it was only 5 inches.
Celia: absolutely great picture of the moon and Venus!!! That new camera is certainly doing a good job for you! Glad Isis got a good bill of health.
Rusty: nice shelves and the silk shirt is certainly to be treasured.
Wow, CG! Did you hear the explosion? That's quite a plume of smoke!
Ric: I meant to tell you that the travertine is lovely. How about a picture of the entire floor once it is completed?

Yep, old man winter reared his ugly head again. :o(( The flowering plum was blooming, the roses were covered in new leaves, the 'mums were pushing up from the ground, etc., etc. They are all frozen this morning! sniff, sniff

Rainfall amounts will average one tenth to one quarter of an inch with locally higher amounts. More moderate showers will move into the area later this morning. Very windy. Much cooler. Mostly cloudy with numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms in the morning...then partly cloudy in the afternoon. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds in the morning. High 54. West winds 25 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph. Chance of rain 70%.

Perfect day to curl up with a good book! This weather was supposed to hit yesterday evening, but it stalled north of us. Wee've had wind and rain for a couple of hours now. The brunt of the storm is making it's way towards Jax now.

The previous tenant showed up yesterday to move his furniture out. I made an offer on 2 pieces of furniture on Friday, but he turned it down. I got a call from our property manager yestreday after the yard sale that he not only accepted the offer, but threw in a 3rd piece LOL! He didn't rent a big enough truck to take all the furniture. He gave our property manager a cedar chest. The cedar chest is at the foot of the bed. I got the wicker chair.
