Much of your article took be back to my early childhood very near Balboa Park. I remember it as living near a tropical flower forest. San Diego has grown up so much since those times for me in the 50's ,yet Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo have retained so much of the original charm that I started to pinch myself to grow back up after reading this!
There is a picture of me standing tall yet only head to head with that Gorilla entry statue.
Thank you so much for the memories!

Yeah, thanks for the memories!

I have lots of most excellent memories from my time in the San Diego area during the early '80's but one of my funniest is from a trip to the zoo. Not just a tourist type trip, but a HOT DATE at the zoo.

The big plan was to meet near the flamingos which are located near the entrance. I'm in a cute outfit and my best walking shoes waiting in the shade...the kind of shade made by trees...trees...full of locals...local squirrels.

Oh, how cute, as the date and I converse about life, the universe and everything...(can you see this coming down Broadway, or Washington Ave, or whatever? I didn't) a squirrel parks on a branch *directly* over my head.

Good night, Irene, I failed to notice the tiny sign "out house - squirrels only" over my head. What? Was that one GIANT drop of rain? Ten minutes into this HOT all-day kind of date. Bushy - tailed arboreal rodent INDEED.

I did learn a thing or two. One, I can fit my head in a sink and wash my hair where ever I need to. (I carried soap leaves from Crabtree and Evelyn and this event cemented the need into my mind.)
And, two, Fonzi is correct - Cool is as Cool does. My date was impressed I didn't totally freak out but he didn't know or realize that I was spending the day in the park, with or without him. Guys grow on trees but a place like the SD Zoo and Balboa Park and the architecture around University Heights...
