I was raised in Southern California and visited the SD Zoo many times. My mother who loved gardening was an early influence in my life. So much so that to this day I call Bogenvias(sp) "San Diego Reds" the name my mother named the plant after she first saw it . You see we are from Europe originally and she had never seen such a thing .
Thank you for the article. The plants were always a favorite of mine, even at a young age, thanks to my Mom.
Great article. I love the plants there too. Those who go to this zoo with me always comment that I spend more time and take more photos of the plants. It is a wonderful place to see great plants and to study how the landscape designs.
Brings back memories for me too!! As a child, growing up during WW2, we had little money to spare. My dad was in the Marines, away fighting. We lived three blocks from Balboa Park. That was my playground. My friends and I used to go to swing from the weeping willow trees out over the canyons. We thought we were 'Tarzan'. I wish I lived closer so I could 'go back' and see the zoo again. This time I would enjoy all the plants too!
