When I was a teenager, my father decided that he was going to take 1 1/2 months off from work and go on the ultimate American family vacation. I am the oldest of 4, and he figured it would be the last opportunity for a trip of this magnitude before us kids started college and working summers. He spent about 4 months planning the itinerary down to the minutest detail - each day's travel time, campsite, and attraction. The attractions included places like Niagara Falls, Pike's Peak, Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Hoover Dam, Lake Tahoe, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Big Sur, the Redwood Forest, San Francisco, Carmel, Las Vegas, and so many others - including the San Diego Zoo. It was a wonderful trip, and the memories are ones I will always treasure. However, the San Diego Zoo stop (or should I say non-stop) was specifically memorable. We were about a day or two behind schedule by the time we reached California, and my dad, being the regimented type of guy that he is, was starting to get agitated about making up the time to get us back on track. His solution - we had to cut down the time spent at the planned attraction of the day. Let me tell you, the San Diego Zoo stop had been a hilite of road-trip conversation for a week, and was MUCH anticipated. Well, Dad pulled up at the Zoo, posed us kids in front of the entrance sign, took a picture for posterity, shuffled us back into the van, and then DROVE OFF without stopping!!! Oh my, the DISAPPOINTMENT - but we were back ON SCHEDULE... To this day, it remains one of the enduring family jokes, and each of us kids SWEARS we'll eventually get back to really visit the San Diego Zoo. Terri
