Hi Lee Anne, I just love your article. The pictures are amazing. I want to try growing one but wonder if I should bother. I live in southern Ontario (zone 4). I have a west facing window that I get only filtered light from Sept-April (then full sun from noon to sunset for the rest of the year) and my 2 japanese plants are thriving, but my African Violet, Oxalis and Dracena are only barely coping (because of the varied light situation and my watering schedule). I love the beauty of unusual flower formations and variagated leaves, so Hoyas call out to me. Is this only a house plant or can I put them outside. Do you have any suggestions? All the best, Diane
I'm further North in Ontario than you are so Yes!! you can grow them. I have at least half of mine hanging in a North window. I don't put mine outside in the Summer, to high a chance of bringing in pests in the Fall but they are happy to be indoors.
I'd start with an H. carnosa "krimson queen" if I were you, they don't mind infrequent watering, and the leaves are nicely variegated.
Now, finding a supplier in Canada is another story...
