DD's young enough that she's not reached a point of acting spoiled and it's hard to resist her cute plea for something when she can go up and down a toy aisle and play with everything but put 99% of it back without prompting.
But I knew the day needed to come where I made her earn her things if it weren't a special occassion for something. And the day came when she said she needed to buy something and started to try heaving it into the cart. LOL, what a sight!
So I told her we could earn it and come back another time to buy it.
The rewards system has worked out great, I drew a picture of the item on some cardstock and below it the number of squares per one dollar it would cost to "earn" it or buy it. I attached some foil star stickers and each time she does a job beyond the ordinary, pick up after yourself things, she earns a star to put on a square. I am calling this her paycheck.
Having already explained why Daddy must go to work and how lucky we are he earns a paycheck which helps us buy A, B and C.
She seems even at 2 to comprehend this idea and is excitedly working towards buying this toy for herself.
In what ways have you used rewards in your house?
My thinking is there are regular chores, no allowance. And then when a child might desire something special extra can be done to earn it.
