are there mosses that can be incorporated into the landscape either as lawn or separate feature in the tropics? Specifically, I live in Bali, Indonesia, in case there are any native to this area.

    Hello grazio,

I don't find any species of land moss that grow in the tropics. Moss needs shade and damp, which could be found I suppose in rain forests, but most moss prefers cool weather.

I did find several mentions of aquatic mosses from the tropics, but they need to be in water or boggy areas.

    Sorry.

Hey Grazio, I network with moss lovers from all around the world. I've been contacted by folks from Sweden, Germany, Pakistan, China, South Africa, New Zealand. With over 20,000 types of bryophytes, they live everywhere in all types of environments and on various substrates. It is a myth that mosses only live in the shade. Many types of mosses tolerate sun and some are direct sun lovers. However, all mosses do require humidity to thrive. You could water mosses regularly to maintain their lush shades of green. Since you live on the other side of the world from me, I'm not sure of the range of indigenous bryophytes in Indonesia. I'll do some further research with my bryologist friends. Go Green With Moss!

sincere thanks for both thoughtful and useful responses. I have yet to see moss here in Bali, but there could well be some species (I am sure) which live at higher (cooler) altitutudes). It would be lovely to have some at about the 70 to 100 meters on which I garden. thanks for your efforts.
