I sowed some seeds, hoping for future bonsai specimens to remind my folks of their trips to African & Australia. I did my best to nick them a little before soaking overnight in water with a little hydrogen peroxide. The bottle tree (narrow leaf, I think) sprouted up in just a few days with some bottom heat, but the others (flame bottle tree and monkey bread tree) have been stubborn... I read somewhere that they may require not mere soaking but actually pouring *boiling* water over the seeds to deactivate a germination inhibitor in the coating... really? I've got some more seeds so I can try again... or I can try to be patient... I'm just not sure of what I'm doing with these!
On the plus side, I've got 4 of the cutest little seedlings under the lights now... they were getting such a long tap root that I put them in tall plastic cups... I figured I can coil the root around or whatever later when they go into a "real" bonsai pot, but maybe they didn't need to be that restricted as seedlings. I'm new to trying my hand at bonsai, too, so what do I know? LOL
Thanks for any advice you may have about my seeds or seedlings!
