DH said he heard there is a $1,500 allowance you can take off your taxes if you replace your windows in 2009. Is this true? If so it's a project we'd up a year instead of waiting on.
Here's some info http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=windows_doors.pr_taxcr... For the federal program, $1500 is the most you can get (and they look at that combined for any energy efficiency upgrades you do, so if you do other things besides windows you can only get $1500 back total, or 30% of what you spent whichever is smaller not 1500 for each improvement you make) I'd also check to see if there are any state and local rebates--some places may have their own programs on top of the federal one. There's a link at the top of that page to search for local rebates so maybe you can save even more. You might also talk to the company who'd be installing the windows--they probably know what programs are available in your area and might even be able to help make sure you do the right paperwork, etc.
Tir be sure to get a reputable co. to install. I bought mine wholesale and son has been putting them in. Bless his heart he is working when he can on weekends and doing one at a time. The money I've paid him and the extras such as caulk, foam sealant and trim not to mention the agravation for him I regret not getting a co. like window world or something to do the whole job. Good Luck on yours.
