Brachychiton populeneus is the most cold hardy species and grows in many semi arid areas in Victoria Ausralia it can also be found in quite wet and cold areas of fairly dense Eucalypt forest as they are found along the banks of the Snowy River which in winter drops sevaral degrees celcius below zero.
This tree would seem to be one of the least impressive Brachychiton species at first until you plant one and watch the subtle characteristic beauty of this trees form. There is very few trees in the world that combine the character of this tree.Great for group interplanting with Cacti,Cycads,Palms!
It will grow very fast in the right climate producing over 1m growth per season.
A tree grown in the open will branch more freely where as a tree grown with surrounding competition will be fastigiate in the extreme.A specimen i have planted is over 5m high, base 60cm dia, with branches no longer than .5m that shed from the lower trunk leaving a green/grey cracked and very evenly tapering from apex to base, much like a Galliano bottle,Subtley unique!
