This may sound incredulous, but some containers do have lead based inks on the outside. For example, the law allows bread bags to use lead in the ink their bags because it is not touching the food inside. A point I like to make public to parents so that their little ones don't chew on the bags or folks don't turn them inside out to reuse. I don't know what the percent of lets say a yogurt container has on it, but it's a good thing to ask the companies and even our federal government. Packaging manufacturers say the use of lead helps make the colors brighter and longer lasting under the bright lighting conditions of the supermarket shelf.
I don't know how likely it is that lead might leach from plastic containers into the surrounding soil, but it's good to be cautious, especially in your veggie garden.
