Does anyone remove the extra buds from the peony stalks? I had read somewhere how
removing them is good for the plant and helps produce a larger terminal blossom. The
excess small buds rarely form a blossom and consume energy better spent enhancing
the terminal blossom and adding to the food stores for next year.
I tried it last year and had terrific blossoms but there was no way to prove the practice
one way or another. By the time the terminal bud reaches the size of a thumbnail, you
should be able to separate the remaining buds into either viable blossom possibilities
or buds that will swell and die.
I know that thinning is recommended for a lot of plants and is mandatory for fruit trees
but I have seen no anecdotal info from real peony growers.
