It is the old lead-containing miniblinds that are most likely to be discarded, in thrift stores, recycled, etc. I am not a soil chemist, so do not know the likelihood of the lead getting into the soil and crops planted nearby, but I would never use, nor would I recommend that others use miniblinds around food crops or in any area where children might be present. It is too great a risk to save a few dollars. Those of us who are gardeners should quit promoting this idea.

This is an issue that's been debated a lot here, and from what I've been able to discover I think the risk is pretty minimal since it's limited to a fairly small subset of miniblinds. If you purchase cheap new miniblinds, I believe they will be lead free. I use them, but it's one of those issues (like pesticides etc.) where everybody's going to make different decisions about what they're comfortable with.
