Ok maybe this isn't so much for clutter-bugs but for FlyBabies, but here goes...

Wondering if I should just completely discontinue the use of the products altogether or find another solution for the MESS they create in my bathroom! I'm already overwhelmed, so the last thing I need is ADDED WORK for myself.

Suggestions?

I have a walk in shower. I open the door & spray my hairspray. The way my bathroom is set up I can look in the mirror too. Can you but the baby powder on after your shower or standing in the bathtub? It is bad for your lungs...

Ok guess I'll just give up the baby powder altogether. I cannot believe I've lived 51 years never hearing all the dangers of it. Why the hell do they still sell it then?! Good Grief!!!

I only used it because I don't like that clammy feeling where my fat rolls touch and I won't get too graphic, but I'm heavy on top too and it does chaff (sp?).

anyway.. I'm done with it.

the hair spray... hmmm guess I can TRY spraying my hair outside... sigh. ;-(

it's the MESS i'm sick of!!!!

For the under boobs and rolls, nothing beats cornstarch. It can CURE heatrash faster than perscription ointments. The only way to live through a southern summer comfortably...

Hubby uses powders too. I vaccume the bathroom walls & floor and still could never keep up with it.

Hmm I'm going to try spraying in the direction of the open tub. That door and wall that have been being sprayed are tough to clean and gosh, if I could get DH to step into the tub when he powders...and then rinse it real quick...This may work!!!

I mostly lurk around here. Hope it's OK I join in for just a minute. For under boobs & rolls, I just use deodorant. It works for the pits so why not?
I haven't had problems with heat rash or anything for years. (I suppose deodorant is dangerous too, seems like almost everything is anymore)

I tried powders but they would cake up, get gummy, crumbly & sticky and be just as uncomfortable as if using nothing.
I don't recall if I tried cornstarch or not.

It doesn't get as hot up here in the northwest corner of the world, but I do sweat when I garden.

Always good to hear from more folks.

I've never found a way to cut down on the mess from using hairspray or talc (or yes, cornstarch!) so I'm real glad that Cajun2 brought this up. Deodorant/antiperspirant works for me up north here too, it doesn't work so well when the humidity is in the nineties every day down south. Especially if you are prone to get heat rash like I always have been. Even as a skinny kid, I had it bad. Now, though I'd rather be outside playing in the dirt, it makes me miserably uncomfortable "without taking a powder"

you can purchase deoderant that does not have aluminum in it.
You can also buy liquid baby powder. It goes on as a cream? lotion? and then dries to a powder.
I suppose you could stir a little water or lotion into some corn starch and then rub that on.

I use baby powder every day on my son, who is 12 and wears diapers.
I do not like hairspray, mostly the scents I can't handle.
Even unscented stinks to me.
I just don't use it hardly at all. I let my hair grow and pin it back, and cut some bangs around my face, and just go natural! Only on special occasions do I use it.
Wonder if there is some sort of 'homemade' hairspray that one could use?

might google that some time when I have more time...

FrillyLily! Are you serious?! "... liquid baby powder..." ?!! omg!! yes!!

I'm definitely going to check out the 'liquid' bp and then TRY a non-aerosol h.s. and see if it doesn't cut down on the mess considerably. I truly wish I had decent hair that would look good w/o fuss. I was not so blessed.

Meeee too! Cajun2. Even a hat dosen't help! Hairspray is a must have.

My Mom was born in 1917 and she said that they used sugar water to stiffen their hair. Quite expensive and a bug magnet so it couldn't be used in the summer or very often. When she was in high school, part of the dressing up to go to dances involved dipping your comb into temporary coloring stuff and combing stripes of it thru' you hair. She had flags on her nails and red/white/blue in her brown hair for Independance Day. Funny how styles always come back...

Have you tried hair gel?
That may help to hold your hair in place without alot of spraying?
Maybe just a light spritz after the gel sets.
There are all kinds of gels and sprays.
Depending on what kind of look you are wanting, I sometimes use hair wax. I just use it at the root mostly to hold the hair in place. A very little goes a LONG way. It is pricey but lasts a long time.

On the liquid BP I bought some at the $ tree store.
I guess you could get it at walmart or wherever. Might try Walgreens...

Diaper cream stinks. I've used it under my arms/sides-under the bra strap, but gosh, it really smells. I'd rather use powder since most talcs and cornstarch do not have scent and work so well. The mess is the real problem. Hairy Hubby tries to be careful, but that stuff gets everywhere. It's so much easier on a shaved pit...
And, I hope so much cleaner if he steps back into the shower to put it on.

You wouldn't want to apply it as liberally as you would to a baby. Burt's Bees cream is nice. It is more of a paste, not oily. Most are just zinc oxide. Rub it in. I run, and use it on the thighs to prevent chaffing.

I have nothing to help with this discussion as I don't use either. But I do have long hair which is usually in braids or a ponytail or a bun. Years ago I got tired of having to use an Exacto knife to cut the long hairs away from the roller brush on my upright vacuum and then pull them in sections with pliers so it could function again. Awful job! So I started brushing and combing my hair outdoors, in all weather. It has worked. I think it is very clever to think of ways to reduce or eliminate some high-maintainence habits. Especially ones with bad consequences.

My girls used to use styling products that left tiny particles splattered across the bathroom mirrors. I had to use a razor blade scraper to remove them. Glad that era is over.

Just saw this discussion and I love it - thanks to all for the helpful postings. I too have to use hairspray to hold my hair back or it all grows forward and I look like Moe from the 3 stooges. And, huckleberry6, I have taken to brushing my hair outside on the patio too. I had a friend who rushed her toddler to the ER once because one of his toes was turning black - guess what - one of her long hairs had wrapped so tightly around his poor toe that it had cut off the circulation. She was fair haired and couldn't see it!!!

I've seen cornstarch baby powders that are nothing but cornstarch, like you use in cooking. Only they charged 10 times more for calling it baby powder. It's like when they sell epsom salts in the garden center and charge more for it than in the first aid section.

My husband is almost bald (only a BIT of fringe left) and he uses more hair spray than all of you combined. I try to get him to use the non aerosol - any of the junk he puts on his hair makes it look greasy. I keep telling him his hair looks thicker and fuller without spray.

My hair grows forward from the top; I finally decided that I'm too old to fight with it and I have it cut to be styled that way. And I love the silver highlights!! :0)

and I thought I was a freak because of my hubby and his use of bp, I'm so glad to see others are just like me, Thought I was alone in this battle with bp all over everything, I got some good laughs from all of you, thanx, another little note here on cornstarch, I had cervical spine surgery a year ago, during the summer(in florida,) and had to wear a hard shell of a neck brace for 9 months, I used food grade cornstarch and a white cotton sock, the knee length type, I'd dip the sock into the cornstarch and wrap that around my neck, before putting my brace back on after washing my neck,, it was great, no sweat, kept the area so dry and was much more comfortable than the bp, so I'd have to say to those who need to stay dry that it works the best, as believe me, wearing that cast through the summer was a drag,, but what made it worse was the sweating the brace caused. good luck to everyone on resolving the bp issue, I even tried to get hubby to switch to cornstarch, but he just goes and buys his own bp, maybe I'll get him to stop using it after what I tell him I learned here today :)

Hello Ladies! I am a new one here and had a great time reading all your posts! I had the very same hairspray issue in my bedroom (thats where I use it) until I discovered a leave in hair conditioner called Infusium. Its a liquid you comb through to keep away frizz and fly away. After I comb it through, I stand in the middle of the bedroom (away from any walls or furniture if possiblle) and spray just a little bit of hairspray all over and style. I have very thick, long and curly hair (which here in humid South Florida equates to frizzy and stringy) and the Infusium is the only thing I have found that works and doesn't require a lot of hairspray.
I also used the RainX idea on the outside of my sliding glass doors and now I always have a perfectly clear view of the garden. Loved that one!

hi burg, Myself like you , live in wonderful humid florida, with thick , long , curley hair and found the infusiam is the only thing that works for me also, keeps my hair pretty much frizz free, and for all you ladies reading this thread, I tried many , many products, and this one works !! I go thru a big bottle about every 2 weeks, and wouldn't be caught with out it, I even put some in a small/ travel spray bottle and carry it with me for touch ups, I also use a tiny bit of spray, but the baby powder got to go, I told my hubby last night, so I'll see if he starts using the cornstarch I bought for him, and the powder puff to put it on, LOL Jami

I learned about Infusium when I showed horses! LOL! We used it to keep their tails sleek and shiny for the shows! I tried it after YEARS of wearing my hair in a braid all the time and loved it! Great stuff. I will spend my last few quarters to not be without!
I don't do the powder thing, so I don't have that problem, but when I did use it, I always stood on my towel to apply. The towel kept the powder off the floor and my toel always smelled good! (Had to use powder working outdoors with horses in South Florida) Are you guys getting soggy too? Today was our first day in two weeks without a downpour! Rain we needed though!

I need to use aerosol hairspray because my hair is so thin and fine. Only one hair spray I have found is fine enough not to blow my hair or weight it down like the ones with too much water in them. I also generoualy use the after shower powder so I feel really dry between everything, not because I get rashes or the other things.

However, a bit of powder, hairspray, and water with lime on the counter gets like concrete! Spray and Wash is the only thing I have found that does better than others. Does anyone have any good solutions?

Also, I like to splash on powder and it flies everywhere. No wonder I have asthma! I like the sock idea and maybe that would get it where I want it to go without as much getting in the air. I am afraid putting on powder in the tub bedause that would clog the drain in no time. Any other ideas other than going out on my patio naked and putting on powder there?! Along with spraying my hair there?
