defend homeschooling so soon! I'm talking about the recent interest of others asking how old my daughter is and when will she be sent off to pre-school?! I really never gave it a thought. I really think the trend to send them to school at 2, 3, 4 is new. "Back in my day" (sheesh I'm only in my 20's!) you went to KINDERGARTEN at 5 and if you turned 5 in October well then you waited the whole year until next September to enroll.

I'm not bashing pre-school. I can see it's need, especially in today's society where most households are 2 incomes and if the child is in daycare they might as well be in a care-giving and educational set-up.

But in our house I stay home and long ago made the choice to homeschool. I'm not here to bash anyone who uses the ps system. I just wish that my choice was equally as respected. I can't believe the number of people who look down their nose at the IDEA of me keeping my tot home. And this comes after they tell me how either smart or polite she is.

She's spoken in full sentences since 18 months and used big words then such as "appreciate" and now we're up to strange words even like "cannabalism." You know how you tell kids they are so cute you could eat them all up? :D Well yeah that's where we taught her how if you really ate people it'd be called ___ yada yada. Anyhow so she goes around using all these big new words. And she's polite telling one neighbor who recently asked about the sending her to pre-school, "Thank-you Miss _____ for coming over to my house, thank-you!"

I'm teaching her names of plants, about bugs, we read books constantly, she's learning how to rhyme words, some sign language and some French. Why would I send her to pre-school when she can already do those things at home?

As far as socializing, well as home-school parents, you already know the arguments against that. We get plenty of out-and-about time. She goes to a Sunday nursery class (where lol I have also been asked to be the teacher!) and also a weekly story and craft time at the local library so she is among her peers at least twice a week not to mention the local parks we walk or bike to several times a week. She'll also be enrolled in a dance class once she's 3.

This is just me venting but I just had to say it. I wish folks would stop being pushy or nosy and asking when I'm shipping her off. So far I've just smiled because it's my right not to have to defend home-schooling as far as I'm concerned. So please tell me, how have you handled this question?
