Enjoyed this article very much. It was nice to learn a little more about them. We live in a rural area where there are skunks. They are seen only occasionally, we do get a wiff of one in the air from time to time!
Brings back memories of living in the country. A friend would sometimes catch the orphaned baby skunks and have them descented for pets. The hair is NOT soft or silky feeling like it looks. The hair is sort of wiry.
I've also seen my share of friends that had NON-scented skunks as pets, now that is BRAVE! hehehe
Reason way skunks are such a rabies reservoire is presumably skunks' defensive strategy. If they meet a rabid animal, they stand and not exactly fight, but stamp and then spray. I gather a rabid animal can attack a car. If that's the case, it wouldn't be deterred by a skunk threatening it with being sprayed.
