Plant lettuce and tomato's in it.
Our old spreader was pretty much shot, the bottom had rusted and the blades were broken and the adjustment lever had broke so figured by the time we repaired it/hassle/ cost might as well get a new one...it held 250lbs of fertilizer. So we left the hopper open, buried it part way in the ground, added gravel to the bottom for drainage and filled w/ soil, then planted lettuce and tomato. Works great and over the summer when it's too hot here in Florida to grow veggies, I'll plant something else in there.

great idea! I like that you put veggies in it. I too have been lokoing at a way to grow veggies in my tiny backyard. You may just have inspired me to start a container veggie garden. :)

I've been really happy with it.I can walk around it, and reach everything in it no problem. I took a piece of wire fencing to make the "tomato cage"...plenty of room for the "mater" to grow and a good support for bird netting that I'll be putting up very soon.

Your old spreader has a proud new lease on life. It's so pretty holding your veggies. What a wonderful idea for recycling...just the right 'touch of country'. And who among us can resist anytihng old and RED : )

I have an old yellow wheelbarrow I'm going to use for a planter also. Wish I could find an old wagon...ummm, maybe a post on the Freecycle website and someone might have one.

they are great for moving rocks/stone in amounts you dont need the wheelbarrow for.
