We have three acres and our dogs LOVE it all. They seldom do damage other than digging up tunnels made by moles, having a running fit over my daylilies (snap) and thinking hostas are doggie beds. When I garden, it gives them a chance to keep me protected from whatever their doggie instincts tell them is lurking.
We had not totally fenced in the lot until they decided the neighbors were friends waiting for their visits. We have a lab and an coon hound. We decided if we wanted to keep the dogs and neighbors happy, we needed to fence. A four foot picket out front and the usual five foot farmer fence out back around the woods. The lab jumps it like a deer and the coon hound climbs it like a bear - we added another two feet (which has dubbed it the fort look) and still they both can go over. The lab seldom bothers anymore unless he feels there's a threat to mankind. The coon hound doesn't roam without the lab so it's pretty much working.
Love the extra ideas you've suggested. When we were doing some construction, we had a six foot pile of soil piled up and the dog always loved playing king of the mountain. Sometimes I forget that those playful actions are actually instinctual. Thanks for the great article.
