I've taken up the slate tile from a plywood subfloor in my foyer. (god knows that was horrible work - it flaked all over everthing), anyway, I am left with alot of grout (or whatever), on the wood.

What is the easiest way of getting this off the wood subfloor?

It depends on what type of adhesive was used, and how porous the subfloor. I recently pulled some slate up, too -- fortunately only a small area, maybe 6'x4', that had been underneath a wood stove. I scraped the adhesive up with one of those heavy ice-scraping tools, long handle, blade about 6" wide. It took a little effort, but it did clean up nicely.
I'm not sure; those ice scrapers might not be as readily available in Georgia as they are here in Minnesota ;) Best of luck with your project!

Thank you. I've decided to just replace the plywood subfloor - a chisel was doing nicely, however, I thought it would actually be easier to replace the subfloor - Now I have a gouged up subfloor (trying to get the nails out). Finally I got the right tool - I hope, so maybe I'll get the nails out and can just replace the floor. Arrrgghhh

The subfloor had two pieces of plywood. I took up the top one and because the metal door always caught on the rug. I'm just going to tile over the bottom piece of plywood. This way I can have a rug there if I want and be able to open the door the whole way.

Does anyone think there would be a problem with this? I guess they had a double layer of plywood for a reason, but, I don't see a reason for two layers - but, of course, I'm not a contractor.

If you are laying tile down with grout, I was told you need cement board put down first or the tile and grout will crack. You might want to ask for a professional opinion.
