This little "tree" sprung up in my garden over the winter (san francisco). A friend guessed that it's a "mallow." It has not flowered and has grown to about 5 feet with a bare trunk and an oddly pyramid-shaped profile. The leaves are variegated and feel like geranium leaves. Any idea if it's a mallow or something else?

Looks like Tree Mallow (Lavatera arborea variegata). The leaves look right, anyway.
