This weather is drat, calling for more and more rain here as well after a cold weekend even with sunshine and oh that dag gone wind!

Thanks, well so far the daffs keep coming. Unfortuneately my Easter Lily has yet to open. I doubt if it will as it is rather spindly reaching for light around here.

Keeps raining.. We have not seen the sun for well in 5 days. Wonder what the rain gauge will say tonight.

Hey y'all! Thought I'd pop in right quick, wayward daughter that I am. Where's that whip?
So much going on, one of my books got accepted for publication. hopefully in print before summer is out, another poem got accepted in a journal, and one more book will be out within a month. Whew!
Then, there is a big plant sale that I'll have a vendor's booth at in 2 wks.
One of the cats injured her leg, but is now healing wonderfully, thanks to acupuncture and suppliments.
Business has picked up, finally.
And, drumroll, for the first time, I'm entering an arraingement in the iris show while simultainiously co-chairing and clerking. I think I need a cuppa.

Hope all is well with everyone. Blossom, roast duck isn't too bad.
I'll wash the dishes next time, without Coldwater. He rolled around in something funky.

Nice to have the whole gang back at the new cafe!! What a busy, but happy time you have been having there, plantgeek.

Blossom - my yard is so small that I just go to the shed and get my stuff. Sometimes I wish I had land like you, but when I need to start weeding, I am glad for a small lot. LoL. I like your scalltered mailboxes...

Here is some white calla for the cafe. I never really noticed the smell out in the yard, but a bunch of calla does give out a nice subtle fragrance indoors.

Hi Blossom - I have planted some other different varieties of calla lilies in a pot when I can't decide where to put them, and sometimes that indecision lasts several years. So, they do fine, and will bloom. But these white ones are pretty big, so for me, they are definitely in the ground type of plant.

It has been so wet and soggy in the garden these last couple of weeks. I haven't been able to get much done over the easter holidsays. It's just typical to have bad weather when you are off work LoL! The schools have been closed for 2 weeks, opening again on Monday. No doubt the sun will shine then!.

Has elle been in with the cakes yet? LoL!

Terri - yes those are calla lilies. and by all means, spiff them up any way you like. Have you been out of town over the holidays? It has been fairly quiet here in the cafe. My daughter has gone off to a music festival for the weekend so I have the house to myself. Let me know when the cakes and goodies are ready in the cafe and I'll mosey on over to join y'all.

Or, I should just go out to the back and pick some lemons and make us something lemony.

Yes, where is our elle, not working too hard I hope.
Sorry bout the continual rains blossom and the icy patches, we have had nothing but rain all week but finally sunny today and then a gross change for the weekend as it is supposed to get to 88 degrees, one extreme to the other!
Here is a photo of how I remember the Atlantic City boardwalk as a kid when they still had the diving horse at the Steel Pier.

Candee - the first time I went to the Atlantic City boardwalk was in 1976 when my brother first moved to the east coast for work. The last time there was in 2007. And you are right, a huge difference in that time span. Terri - thanks for the photo of Blackpool beach. Looks like a really neat place to visit. Are the horses there for photo ops only, or do they really give kids rides up and down the beach?

Ice cream cones and the beach. A great combination.

hi terri - having my morning cup of coffee here while you are getting ready for dinner. How did the digging go? I will have to do some digging myself. Got about 20 tomato seedlings out in the backyard - I will plant maybe 8-10 of them, and give the rest away. I normally only plant about 4-5, but will aim to can some this year.

Blossom - I can't believe how early you start your day!! If you are two hours ahead of me, were you really awake and off and running after posting on the computer at 5:30 AM Friday???

Ah, shucks, blossom. Here, have a bowl of cherries. We had such a bumper crop on the Stella cherry tree last year that I froze a bunch. If you eat them just as they are thawing, but still slightly crunchy, it is still good. Careful with the pits though, they are not pitted. And madam woodsy would not appreciate any spitting of the pits on the floor LoL.

Terri - you got all your yard work done? I got 5 tomatoes into the ground, and my mom came over to help me cut the grass along the planters where the lawn mower doesn't reach. My mom has always had a vegetable patch, even when we lived in a place where there was only a 15 ft x 20 feet patch of soil.

Hope to see the rest of the gang in the cafe this week.

That ice cream is divine, tuttie frutie? Nice callas blossom sorry you are still mushy there. Dianne we put in 36 tomatoes just because I had started them and then after all the cold and rain it got up in the 90's this weekend while we were away and they all about burned up! Hope the couple I put in pots that I moved to shade make it? I tell you one extreme to the other it seems.
The first time I went to AC was about 1962 and the diving horse was performing then on the steel pier. Also went every summer almost after than and the most memorable was the performance by Dianna Ross and the Supremes on the pier! What a show.
Terri your beach is quite similar, guess they were all designed in a similar manner then.

I'm alive! LOL I never want to be that ill again. But it sure felt good to wake up this morning and realize I had slept through the night without incident. I opened my eyes and remember thinking I felt great! That lasted until I sat up and realized I was so weak I could hardly move. But a bowl of cream of wheat on a very empty stomach gave me a little boost and by dinner I was feeling almost normal again.

Poor Pyxle was so relieved to see me sitting up that she picked up all her toys and put them back in her basket. Apparently she had thought I needed them because she had put them all on the bed with me and growled at Bob when he had tried to put them away. She had even given me her favorite squeaky toy which she usually hides and won't let me touch. She didn't leave me out of her sight for a week so when I went out and sat on the porch this afternoon she was one happy pup. She loves to fetch her ball but wouldn't even let Bob remove it from my bed to play all week.

Well, I hate to go back to bed after being in it so much but suppose I should get some sleep and not push it this first day back among the living.

My maters are drenched and half of them are dead already. No photos and no tree peonies as just too sopping out there and the tulips have croaked over. Yep, it had to be the pretties here that did the trick because no medicine seemed to help!

It has been a very long and ardous year for us with lots of trauma and challanges physically, emotionally and financially. One thing at a time we keep managing to rise up and keep from drowning. I'm sure the stress contributed a great deal to weakening my system so the flu was able to wreak havoc with me. They say that "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" so I should have super strength soon!

Now, I need to speak to Ms. Woodsy and see if she could manage to find me a nice lunch. Fresh crab salad would be really nice.

Oh, I'm not down and out. I bounce back pretty well and usually don't even realize stress has me in it's grip until I get sick. The rest of the time I am too dense to realize I might be having a problem. Then by the time I realize the stress has built up I am already on the mend again and am rather surprised to realize I had been stressed to begin with.

I found a new (to me anyway) vice today at Costco. Dark Chocolate with dried pomegranate in the center...yummy goodness indeed!

I just got off the phone with my son. He is in quite a bit of pain but that is actually a good thing at this point because it indicates there is no permanent nerve damage and he was able to walk with a walker from his room to the nurses station on his own. It is a real relief to know he can walk! He's a strong young man and will push himself through the therapy rather than lay about feeling sorry for himself. I'm proud of him.

Our town is having a Spring cleanup this week and will haul away any old furniture or appliances, electronics etc. for free. I had an old TV and microwave to get rid of and hadn't made it to the refuse center yet so this will save me time and money too. They charge $25 dollars for any TV or monitor at the center. I noticed as we came home this afternoon that a lot of folks are taking advantage of the towns offer and there are huge stacks of stuff in the alleys. I had to put blinders on so I wouldn't go hunting for trash to treasure items...gotta fight that pack it home urge. We are trying to simplify and cut clutter and adding "treasure" now is not part of that process. But it was hard seeing wood tables, chairs and I don't know what else out there for the taking and not even stop to look. By morning I am sure that anything of use will have relocated to someone else's home. There are a great many people here that will make sure of that...but I am not going back out to be one of them... I'm not...I'm NOT! Now I am hoping it will start raining so I can stick to my decision...

Sorry to hear about your son's condition, is he the one who went to the Far East? Pleased to hear he is responding well to treatment. Hope you are feeling better today?

Back home and droppin in the cafe to say howdy. Raining like crazy here and almost dark outside, very gloomy.
Hey Zany wish they would do those pick ups around here, but in the county we don't ever have that option. I know they do it in town on occasion and I always see some dandy stuff sittin out, but must refrain same as you as I have enough stuff just sitting round as it is. Glad to hear your son is improving. You certainly have a lot to be of grave concern, just take it a bit at a time and don't overwhelm yourself with stress.
So, anybody heard from elle? Hope she hasn't gotten sick taken care of those kids!
Sure is nice to have the cafe to drop by on such a miserable day. They are saying it may rain straight through this week as well.
Here is the apple tree in blossom at the cabin, was the only ray of sunshine we have seen for a while.

Raining out this morning. Not heavy but still wet and gray. I guess it is suppose to be this way most of the week here. I don't really mind it though. It keeps the forest green and the grass growing.

Candee, the apple tree is beautiful. I'll be looking forward to sone fresh apple pies here at the cafe come harvest time.

My brother is the one who moved to the Philippines. He loves it over there and has planned his retirement there for years. He keeps trying to convince Bob and I to join him when we retire but I can't handle the heat and it is too far from all the grandkids for me. Besides, why leave this beautiful area of redwoods and mountains when we love it here.

Zany - glad that you are well enough to be able to get to work.

Candee - glad to hear that your surgery went well and you are back at home, relaxing with Terri's cocktails (BTW - Terri - you can add some rum to mines too)

Both Candee and Terri said that they have never tried persimmons before - I brought some to the cafe last year, but they must have forgotten. Here it is on the menu again. These are the Fuyus - the hard kind that you can eat when they are crunchy. The coloring goes nicely with your Chimeanea, Terri.

We have twice a year miscellaneous pickups here - great way to get rid of stuff. I have to admit that I have picked up a few things, but I am definitely getting better at saying NOOOOO...to potential treasures.

We have been lucky this past month - a right mixture of sunshine and rain.

Keeping my fingers crossed that my knee will hold out until Sunday evening. Have 4 shows to do - one on Friday, two on Saturday, and one on Sunday. I am leaving work at 1 today and hope it is dry enough to go out and check when I get home.

I have never grown a sunflower. I think I'll pick up some seed and put some in this year. That should be fun for me and the birds.

Soils, That dancing sounds fun. I always wanted to be a dancer. Unfortunately I have two left feet and am about as graceful and elegant as a drunken hippo wearing roller skates in a mud bog.

Blossom, the mailbox set against the flowers makes a pretty postcard type picture. It reminded me that we need to take a ride out through the countryside to enjoy the early spring wildflowers.

Candee, I am so sorry to hear about your tomatoes drowning. I hope the Zinnia seeds fair better. I took Pyxle out a few minutes ago and it was drizzling again but now the sun is streaming in the window so it looks like we are going to have one of those passing showers kind of days... enough sunshine to make you want to go outside and enough rain to keep it too wet to do anything.

I hope you meant Elle is swamped with work and new animals right now and not swamped in rain and muck.

Terri, keep the fire going in that Chimenea. I think I may be popping in and out between showers and a nice cup of Earl Grey tea by the fire would be delightful.

BLOSSOMBUDDY, to insure that you get the best blue blossoms possible...

http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/colorchange.html
Quoting:To obtain a blue hydrangea, aluminum must be present in the soil. To ensure that aluminum is present, aluminum sulfate may be added to the soil around the hydrangeas.

Authorities recommend that a solution of 1/2 oz (1 Tbsp) aluminum sulfate per gallon of water be applied to plants (which are at least 2-3 years old) throughout the growing season. Important: Water plants well in advance of application and put solution on cautiously, as too much can burn the roots.

To make the aluminum available to the plant, the pH of the soil should be low (5.2-5.5). Adding aluminum sulfate will tend to lower the pH of the soil. Another method for lowering the pH is to add organic matter to the soil such as coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peels, grass clippings etc.

If the soil naturally contains aluminum and is acid (low pH) the color of the hydrangea will automatically tend toward shades of blue and/or purple.

The choice of fertilzer will also affect the color change. A fertilizer low in phosphorus and high in potassium is helpful in producing a good blue color(25/5/30 is good. Potassium is the last number). Superphosphates and bone meal should be avoided when trying to produce blue.

After stating this with much certainty, I hasten to add that it is virtually impossible to turn a hydrangea blue for any length of time if it is planted in soil with no aluminum and that is highly alkaline (chalky). One would have to be very diligent in keeping the soil properly conditioned as stated above.

Perhaps the best idea for growing blue hydrangeas in an area with alkaline soil would be to grow them in very large pots using lots of compost to bring the pH down. The above suggestions for bluing would also work for a potted plant. Reduce the strength of the Aluminum sulfate to 1/4 oz per gallon of water. In a pot, it will be much easier to control the requirements for bluing.

One last suggestions for those who are serious about this process. It is important to have your water tested so that it will not "contaminate" the soil that you have so rigorously balanced. The pH of the water should not be higher than 5.6.

Planting hydrangeas near a concrete foundation or sidewalk will often affect the color since the pH of the soil may be raised considerably by lime leaching out of these structures, making it difficult to obtain blue.

Oh boy, glad I made it in time for doughnuts I love them. Now there blossom, I think Zany is on to something, I have always heard that it is the soil that brings the different colors to them, not the variety., but it is in a blue pot!!!

That site is really good for information. He also tells how to make them pink/red, how to best dry them and how to dye them with fabric dyes. Plus info on all the different types that are sold.

I just love the internet with all the information that is available 24-7 without having to drive into the library and remember to return books that I can't afford to buy and don't want to give back.

One can never have enough donuts!!! Love the arrangement, Candee.

Now all of you who are under the weather - have some chrysanthemum tea. Guaranteed to work magic. Zany, Blossom, Terri and any one else who is ailing - you all get well real soon now.

The rasberry filled are a jelly and there are several other jelly filled a bit further down the counter to the right. Help yourself. The baker is a good friend of mine and he keeps his cases fresh by refilling them fresh every 2 hours. Anything older is donated to the local shelters at the end of each day. Needless to say, because they are always sold fresh he doesn't have a lot to give away.

Hi Terri. I am still a bit congested but better.

No more fever
no more chills
no more sneezes
sharp and shrill

No more coughing
to rack my body
no more syrupy
Nyquil toddy

Time to rise,
time to shine,
the sun is out
the day is mine!

Pyxle is jumping about and trying to herd me to the door in my night clothes so I guess I had better get into the shower and get moving so she can have a nice run at the park before I head off to work.

Have a great day!

Nice day while at work today naturally but now calling for nasty storms and rain for the next few days again.
Thought about goin gto the cabin but not in the rain, just no point cause can't even cut the grass. Guess we shall decide on Friday after I get the stitches out. Sometimes, as you know, the weather is completely different over the mts.

Well, goodness I missed a lot. Thank you for all that wonderful advise on my new blue hydrangea. It is still in the pot. Hope to take some cuttings to make more!

We have had a very long and bad week with the other half suffering an on the job injury and me having to literally go the extra miles... over 1000 of them just to pick him up from his job and get him home and go to the doctors to take care of him and then myself having worn myself plumb out. I did get over my cold, but then today had another dental appointment, so just call me a swollen faced chipmunk for now and that will tickle my old funny bones just dandy.

Dont look like much gardening to go on here for a bit. We also got 3 more inches of rain in the last 24 hours and it is still coming down.. so man the life boats, lets get our critters in line 2 by two and put the pots and containers on board! LOL

Glad all of us sickos are recovering and nice to see elle has returned!

So ok, are we moving to a new Cafe? I know there is bound to be a nice new one all spanky brite and clean just down the road so who is linking? Everyone, grab an ore and lets get rowing!

The heck with the dishes here too terri, COLD WATER will get them for sure! LOL Woof!

Row, row row your boat.. eeks look out for that

Its never the same on any given day. I just thank God this time he was IN the country!! Some days that job of his is a real pain in the elsewhere.

The things some of us got to do to make a living.. and yeah, in case your wondering.. its what we call customer service... international...and least now he no longer has to go to Canada. Whew! He has had a change in territory.

Ok, grabbing ores here, on the count of three! 1- 2 - 3 - boink!

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...The juice is on.
And your wayward bud is back. Sorry for the absence. Things have been too busy and Iv'e been whooped- one book released 2 wks ago, another on the way, spring, festivals to sell my plants and books, work, and to top it all off, menopause hit about 3 months ago. I'm finally getting better sleep with the help of a homeopathic remedy and herbs to cool the heat. Holy crap, when they said hot flash, they weren't kidding.

I haven't forgotten y'all. Where else on earth can I go to get such a lovely lumpy bra, or a parrot with attitude. Perhaps I should put the parrot in my bra.
I could never find better fish to fry than here.

Oh, plantgeek, he kinda had a twist and fall. Could not pilot his ship since he hit the poopdeck and I had to take him to the Pain clinic. He kinda garnered himself a royal pain in the sitter. He will be ok. Heard the doc stomped on his foot to transfer the pain!

Nice you could make it aboard. Looks like you got a fine fish there mate Lets get the outboard cranked up and catch up with terri!.

Hey terri, wait up, geek and I are getting dinner here and I am going to start a new thread for water features and plants.. look for this boat there and will catch you around the bend at the new cafe!

I cant wait to see all the dancing. So grab your fancy bras and parrots and lets zoom!

(I will edit back and link the water features as soon as I get it up and running here...)
