We used to live on the Dogwood Trail in Paducah KY and move to NC in 2003 and what is the name of our road? Dogwood Trail! We love it here and on our property have at least 35 dogwood trees, but we are still counting. We now live at the site of an old plantation and we are wondering how old some of trees maybe. How many years can these beauties grow? We were told some were planted in the 1840's but they appear to have been split on purpose. We were also told this practice in those early years were to make them spread. Does this split happen naturally at times or was it done on purpose? One still has the splitting rock embedded in it's trunk.
How interesting! That was something that I did not run across as I was researching the article.
This year the Dogwood Trail in Paducah was canceled because of the massive ice storm damage. The debris is just about cleaned up, but the trees are in such sad shape from broken limbs that it was decided to wait until next year to resume the tradition.
