I have a 14" Dahlia imperialis cane with one eye and one sprout. It arrived yesterday and I laid it in a flat with some ProMix to keep it moist overnight. It will be started indoors and will go outdoors in a 1/2 oak barrel as soon as temps allow in May.
My question: The sprout is 1.5" long and is growing parallel to the cane. So, do I have to plant it vertically? Or if I plant it horizontally (which places the already growing sprout horizontally), will the sprout redirect and grow up instead of sideways?...If I plant it vertically, that puts the second 1/4" eye pretty far down under the surface of the soil, whereas horizontally, they will both be equidistant under the surrface.Trying to decide if I need to go out and buy a starter pot for it that's big enough...
Also, which part of the cane do the roots emerge from?
Only 10% of me expects to get this to bloom, but I'm curious to see what effect the long daylight hours will have on it. It's probably the farthest north Dahlia Tree cane so I've got to see what I can do with it...Was unsuccessful in finding one last year, but now I GOT one and it looks pretty healthy to me.
