I too live in nj and planted 2 moonbeam coreopsis last spring. They bloomed all summer and I did not prune them in the fall, just let them die. Then, I expected them to bloom this spring, but here it is April 20, 2009 and they look like a burned bush (no signs of life). I just looked today and it looks like one little seedling may be starting, away from the original clump. They are planted in a raised bed behind a retaining wall. So disappointed. And then I hear you cant kill yours!!! What did you say about 1st, 2nd and 3rd year?? Should I leave them in for another year, or just give up??
