Andre' says we'd believe it if we could see them... without having a chance for the leaves to replenish the bulb, there's pretty much nothing left of them after they bloom.
Wow is right! And I gasped when I read that they throw the bulbs away, too. I understand the rationale, but gee, it seems such a waste. You'd think they could donate them to a hospital or prison and let them replant them so the leaves could feed the bulbs for next year and bring joy to patients or inmates. Oh, well.
Great article, Jill. I've been following your Keukenhof tour this spring and it's probably as close as I will ever get to experiencing that beauty. Thank you so much for bringing the Keukenhof to us!
They can't donate the bulbs (or send me a crate for postage LOL), because the bulbs would need to be replanted with their leaves intact in order to regenerate for the following year. Can you imagine how much longer it would take to dig up 7 million bulbs if you were trying to be careful with the foliage?
