So the waterbed heater was really doing a great job radiating heat into pots sitting on top of it on the cold cement floor. I added some gallon bags of sluggish tubers in damp soil for a real good heat-up to see if they'd pop eyes.
I'm pretty sure melted plastic fumes aren't good for any life forms, so I'm airing out the basement, have the vacuum idling to clean up all the spilled dirt and shards of melted ziploc and vowing NOT to use said heater for anything other than gallon pots from now on! I had it on the lowest setting, but for plastic bags it must have been equal to "broil" in an oven. Such a messy hobby, these dahlias.
