My hubby and I just resurfaced our patio by staining and faux painting again after six years. I hate to mess it up with water dripping out of urns. Any ideas for dark colored trays to go under them that would not be expensive. The clay ones are up to $14 for a large one at Home Depot. Do I have to resort to plastic ones, help , any ideas.

Gee, I'd rather have the water stain and scrub it off ,than the mess of trays to clean up. Maybe raised stands would work . It's going to rain anyway and fill up the trays . At least , if they were raised , you could get a long handled brush under them .digger

Nothing comes to mind, but just had to tell you your work is beautiful. I've seen some beautiful plates at the thrift store that you could use. Just remembered I bought some small ones to place under plants in the house and they do add a lot to the scenery. The price sure beats the high price at Home Depot or Lowe's.

I did forget about rain since we don't see any for months at a time. I would rather have some rain during the summer months than all the dirt, etc. that collects.

I use terracotta colored plastic pot saucers under my pots of course I use terracotta colored pots. We just empty the excess water from them by tilting large pots along with their saucer toward the edge of the patio. They are not to heavy to empty and a quick rinse with the hose if they need it keeps them looking good.

I put the pot feet under all my pots. I keeps the rolly polly bugs and slugs out and prevents the ring on the deck.

Go to a deli that makes up fruit trays - Publix or Winn Dixie in our area - ask them if you can buy several of the clear tops that go on the trays. If that doesn't work, you can order these trays online - I use a LOT of them.

ok, I'd say raised footed pot holders. Home depot has some plastic trays with roller wheels on the bottom for cheap

But, what i really wanted to comment on was that little glass gazebo!

Can we see pics of THAT?? pretty please?

Thanks for all your wonderful ideas, I am putting them to use. Raising them makes sense. I had raised barrels with wood under them and they did not stain the patio. You must all be talking about my Aviary, it is screened it, we built it out of steel and then screened it ourselves.

curves-what did you use for the top? ...and did you use rabbit wire or the original screen material?

I have an aviary, too. But, there Is no way I could use regular screen...the racoons would be through it in no time for free lunch...

If I remember right, curvesarein said she lives in Arizona, or maybe NOT. You have a beautiful place, a place to be very proud of. Working together to make a beautiful place is the answer, getting my DH out in back to hlep is like pulling teeth. He does mow the front, but that's about it. Oh he has great ideas but putting them to work is something else.

I am in AZ, high desert of Kingman. Hubby and I are at our best working together. We come up with great ideas. We mapped out our whole property on paper before it was built. But of course I don't care how many times you do it, you would do it different next time. You learn. I am learning since it gets cold here and some snow, that we need more evergreens. We planted wisteria on a trellis, yet it dies and is messy in winter. My neighbors put up a lady banks rose and it filled in and is beautiful, stayed pretty green all winter.
As for the Aviary, it is hardware cloth with steel support and the screening you get at Home Depot for overhead patios. The whole thing has hardware cloth, except the top. I had a bunny at one time in there and he would eat through that screen probably. Now it is just a place for my cat to be contained. She has a ladder in there to climb and watches the birds.
I do want to join. Gotta do that soon. I also have to rejoin my favorite animated card site. Jacquie Lawson.com Anybody seen her cards?

By the way, I had bought 3 large plastic pans with rollers at Home Depot. They said $8 each, but that was wrong, supposed to be double, but he gave them to me at that price. I ended up using them for my larger plants on the patio and they don't look bad. Terracotta color. Made them easy to get back on patio too and no marks from rollers. Now we are to get rain and I just hope my patio holds up. It doesn't look like much of a storm though.

My trellis, Wisteria is just coming in. Little plants in rocks coming up are morning glories sufacing. This is made out of rebar criss crossed and tied with strong wire and of course wood posts and support. The lights are net lights, 3 sets. I buy them end of season and stock up.

Now hubby got carried away with making the patio too complicated. He thought all the grout lines needed to be filled in, well, I don't think so. Here is the walk on the side of our house I just did, I will do it to match the patio again. But when we do the front, I am doing it this way. Grout doesn't have to be the same color. This walk took me about 15 minutes to faux finish. No clear coat on it yet, so it is not shiny.

That is the Lady Banks rose bush behind my mural on my neighbors trellis. It was in full bloom with white roses , but new growth now. Also the paint on the fence is just regular water based paint called Sequoia. The mural was done in 2003 with craft paint, freehand and some stencils.

curves, I really like your space! I use pot feet under the planters in my front courtyard, and they work well. I started using them when I had concrete. Now that I have the Saltillo tile laid out there, I'm really glad I figured something out. I make my own to match my handmade tiles, but I've found the terra-cotta ones work really well and hold up fine; they'd look nice with your colors.

Those look nice and I looked at some. I ended up with saucers with rollers and discovered I liked that for when I need to clean off the patio, we get lots of wind, and move things out of the way. I found some nice clear plastic with wrought iron too at Wal-Mart, only six dollars. I bought 3 of them. So I will have to take a few new pictures tomorrow. But here is an update as we put stuff back.

Beautiful patio, and you did an excellent job on the painting.
What kind of paint did you use? Or is it a concrete stain?

Taters,
It is wal-mart paint in a dark terra cotta watered 2 to 1, 2 parts water to 1 part paint. The faux on top was ragged with a color called brownie. I almost feel like trying the front without sealer. The sealer made lots of markes where it did not dry clear, left white marks. Just to see how long it lasts, if it starts to wear, I can then seal. Sealer is the most expensive part.

I use terra cotta saucers under the pots and clear plastic saucers under the tera-cotta saucers. I think it looks OK and keeps the patio clean, too. The clear plastic saucers do not show too much with the terra-cotta saucers placed in them.

What is "neat"? That word isn't in my vocabulary. I tried but doesn't work for me, inside or out. So I run around in circles and get nothiing done. My other siblings are very neat, have no idea what happened here.

Still painting on DH's project. His excuse is that I haven't finished painting some of the boards he wants to use. Could put up the posts, but who needs an argument now.

Hi all,
well I am still getting water spots and mineral deposits from the hard water. Any ideas on cleaning them off? Someone, the guy who did our stamped concrete said to get some Rain Ex or something like that from Walmart for your cars and spray that on in a sprayer. I haven't really tried much yet. Was thinking vinegar and water. There is just no way, saucers and all to not get your patio wet. LOL

we have hard water, too, from lime in the water. The only product I know to get it off(besides a chisel!!), is lime-away. It is a chemical you pray on, and let sit, until the lime dissolves.

However,it will probably take the paint off chemically?

I think the rain-x might work, but only before you get the deposits, not after. But, I also wonder if it would make it slick to walk on?...that would hurst to slip and fall on that flooring

Hard water here too, the minerals deposits are so bad at times. I used lime off (I buy it at Smart & Final in a gallon container), but don't think I would want to try that on your pretty cement. Sorry no answers here.
