| 30 days seems like a lifetime in the world of nature. The scenery around us suddenly changes …." It is a new dawn, a new day, and a new life and we feel real good". Springtime is like music to my ears. And, I find it difficult to spend time too far from the waterfront. So, please join me in “On the Waterfront” – Part 2. This theme began back in February at:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/952115/
I’ll start with a few recent photos of the Osprey. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| This is Mr. and Mrs. Osprey. The male is on the left and the smaller of the two. These two are experienced parents and have raised several families at this site. In the months ahead, I will visit the site periodically in hope of getting a few more photos of the entire family. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| They live in a "ritzy" neighborhood with a high quality nesting site. Here the Mrs. is sitting on the nest. Unfortunately, I'm unable to look down into the nest so we will have to wait until we can count heads.

| Spectacular photos, I love the Cormorants photo. I'm amazed that this duck makes their nests in the tops of the taller trees. We recently took a boat trip on our lake to see them and the herons' nests.
The Egret and Osprey photos are excellent! You sure are good with that camera! Thanks for the great showing.

Pelle, Margaret ... glad you liked the Egret photos.
Here are a few Baltimore Oriole photos taken about 10' from the shoreline of a local lake that I frequent quite often. This time of year, they are quite busy, i.e. choosing mates and nesting sites. They will be busy the next week or two building their unique nest. Although to get a decent photo in the natural setting requires patience, they are constantly racing up and down the shoreline. Their voice is unmistakable. Click the image for an enlarged view.

linthicum Linthicum Heights, MD (Zone 7a)
June 25, 2009 09:26 PM Post #6739324
| Hi Margaret, these were taken at 500mm. I had a 1.4x teleconverter on which gave me 700mm but I was too close for that focal length. I had difficulty getting the full Osprey in the photo so I took the teleconverter off. I'm going to guess that the distance was 100 to 150 feet (30 to 45 meters). They were rather easy shots but I am still learning the use of exposure compensation in certain circumstances especially shooting into the sky. These photos were all taken within 30 minutes of each other but the sky can change dramatically in that time frame. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| After a short hiatus, I thought I would revive this thread once again. Last weekend, I went to Bombay Hook to look for the American Avocet and to watch the Greater Snow Geese. The weather was not very good. Earlier in the year, I found myself fascinated with searching for tagged Snow Geese among the thousands around me and then research where they were tagged. It seems that most of them come from the same general area north of Quebec, Canada.
The masses haven't arrived yet. The Greater Snow Goose population has grown considerably and efforts are underway to reduce the overall population. Looking through my photos from last Sunday, I only found one goose with a neck collar - RM59.
I reported the sighting and immediately found out that it was an adult female that was tagged on Bylot Island in August, 2009. Bylot Island lies off the northern end of Baffin Island in Nunavut Territory, Canada, about 2,300 miles from where I sighted it. Bylot Island is one of the largest uninhabited islands in the world but serves as a breeding grounds for up to 80,000 Snow Geese.
Here is an in-flight, not so good, photo of RM59. Click the image for an enlarged view.

pelle, the distance to Bombay Hook is about the same as it is for you to go to Cape May. You should definitely make a trip down there sometime this Fall or Winter. The reason I went there last Sunday, as I mentioned, was for the American Avocet. I had read somewhere that October was the best month to see them. Of course, the Snow Geese will be there from now until late February, early March. There were quite a few ducks there also but were out of my camera range. Do you have a spotting scope ? They have a number of trails but I primarily just drive the wildlife loop.
The following link provides some of the most recent sightings ...

You all call it !!! Heads or Tails ???
A Double-crested Cormorant flipping an eel into the air to get a better grasp. The Eel would wrap himself around the Cormorant's beak which made it difficult for the Cormorant to swallow it. What I found interesting was that the Cormorant would sometimes go under water with the eel. Certainly he couldn't drown it. I assume there was less resistance from the eel when they were under water.

| I have enjoyed this thread so much Charlie! You continue to have awesome photos!
I went down to Chincoteague this past weekend, and the weather was outstanding! I took a ton of photos... with my concentration being on sunrises both mornings. I'm getting better, but I definitely think I need a better, faster lens!
The snow geese were really cool though! That was a first for me! |

Karen, yes, this past weekend was great. Glad you got to see the Snow Geese. Were there any shorebirds around ? I might get down there sometime this winter, maybe February. I'll be lurking around the eastern shore here in Maryland when I'm not photographing the Bald Eagles. I spent Saturday and Sunday at the Conowingo Dam because the weather was so great. More eagles are arriving each day. On Sunday, someone said that they counted over 200, using their binoculars. In 12 hours, I took so many pics it was ridiculous. It would be embarrassing to tell you how many. I started shooting at 700mm and eventually backed down to 500mm because I was missing too many "fishing" shots. Having a big lens is nice but when it's on a tripod you also miss everything that flies right over your head. There's a lot of photographers there that just handhold their camera/lens. I'll eventually post some of them on my Bald Eagle thread.
I'll start a new "On the Waterfront" thread when activity warrants it. I enjoy taking photos of gulls, also. They are a great subject to practice on since you usually find them everywhere. While in the Ocean City, MD inlet, I took a few photos of Laughing Gulls against the blue sky. Here's a few to sort of close out this thread ...

| Mrs. Ed, I really don't need any more cameras. If I can't get the photos I want with the equipment (Nikon D300 with Nikkor 500mm lens) I already have, then it's a losing proposition. I usually also carry my Nikon D200 with a Sigma 50-500mm lens when I'm birding from my car. Then, I grab whichever camera/lens fits the situation. Some individuals do carry two cameras with them. But I guess I can't multi-task as well as some. Most of the overhead shots aren't any good anyway. All you get is a dark bottom.

| LOL. Didn't know you had so much equipment. I carry my point and shoot sometimes just so I can take a quick pix of something that my 70-300 is too big for. And also to take any video. But if I had two DSLRs, I would have a problem carrying them both, so I get what you mean. |

| Mrs_Ed, I also have a Nikon D70 DSLR that currently has a 105mm micro lens on it. My wife was kind of enough to give me her double door wall cabinet with several shelves to store my cameras w/ lens attached. One on each shelf. It functions like a gun cabinet. Of course, she was tired of seeing the camera equipment lying around. |
