I just want to give you my sympathy. I put a little one in an area way in the back of my yard a few years ago, and a year or two later thought, oh-oh, big mistake, how am i ever going to get that out of there? It is still there and you have confirmed it's going to be hard to remove.
I am in the process of trying to take out a big patch of lilies of the valley---very tough roots, never should have let that patch grow. . .
Oh, and another one that is still popping up in a couple places: Artemisia 'Limelight', aka wormwood.
Have you tried Round-Up, or its extra-strength version known as brush-killer?
My sympathies about your Hootenanny plant (my own private name for it)!
