I didn't know about the rice hulls either. I'll have to check into it.
This year, I've had the best seed-starting experience ever. Filled up almost two shelves with two, four-foot lights on each and not a single instance of dampening off. I used coir and a few time-release fertilizer pellets (left over from when I didn't know better) in newspaper pots. I'll probably buy the coir in bulk next year, as I underestimated how much I needed and had to keep going back to the store for coir bricks. I love that it's sustainable because it really works for me!
I like the rice hulls! SallyG found some for all of us at a local brewers' supply company -- check your yellow pages (or Shirley, Dmail Sally, because her source might not be far from you; I'm not sure).
I've used my half and half mix of regular potting mix and coir plus rice hulls for some winter sowing containers, and it seems to be working just fine.. might even retain moisture a bit better than just potting mix, although you know I use moisture crystals regardless, and they really help with that also.
