This Peony was given to me by a high school friend's grandmother about 27 years ago. She was an old lady then, and has long since passed, but she was my first real gardening inspiration. So many plants remind me of her, as her garden was my first encounter with so many beautiful flowers, including Fern leaved Peonies, Tree Peonies, Siberian Iris, Columbine, Coral Bells, and unusual (to my young, inexperienced eyes at the time) hybrids of bearded Iris and Daffodils. Her front yard was bordered all the way around with a vast assortment of bulbs and perennials, with blooming trees and shrubs dotting the property. The back yard, as you left the rear exit of the house, was a big cottage style garden, with a stone path down the center and rose arbors at each end. That first sight of it so many years ago made such a huge impact on me- mature clumps of peonies, iris, columbine, wood hyacinths, etc. all in bloom as far as the eye could see! She had been tending this garden for nearly 50 years when I saw it.

I remember her family rolling their eyes and telling me how she had spent $50 for a single Iris or Peony (like back in the 60s and 70s!). She was like so many of us here on DG in her gardening passion, I can't help but think about how much she would have enjoyed DG.

She gave me my first starts of Bearded Iris, Herbaceous Peonies, Siberian Iris, Columbine, Baptisia (that she called "blue Lupine"), and this special gem, her precious Fern Leaved Peony. This plant has come with me everywhere I've lived, and often has sprung up babies from pieces of root left behind. However it has been very slow to reproduce in every garden environment I've had it- I see why they're so expensive in catalogs!

Just wanted to share my gem, and what makes it so special to me :-)
