I planted orange & purple tulip bulbs 2 years ago, the first spring they all came up & looked pretty and this year only the orange ones came up! Do the purple ones taste better or are they thumbing their nose at me, or what? I have NO luck with bulbs. One year I planted 95 bulbs and got 20 flowers, then found out my husband thought they were weeds & was mowing them down.
Were the bulbs all mixed in together, or were the orange ones and purple ones segregated? If they were all mixed together I find it unlikely that some critter would have been able to just pick out the purple ones, but if the purple ones were all together in a slightly different area than the orange ones then somebody could have munched them, or maybe the soil in that area is a little more moist and they rotted, etc.
My mother in law has problems with squirrels digging up her tulips. I'd go dig around where you planted them to see if they're rotted or missing. Or do you have moles?
I mixed them all in together... a few orange mixed with a few purple, in 10 groups of 3 and only the orange came up! Now the orange look a little silly, one here, 2 there... I don't think I have moles...my husband would have noticed moles in his lawn and taken drastic and unkind measures lol...geez you're right I'll have to investigate...
