Hi, I purchased a lake home where for what ever reason they installed the gas range with a large window above it. There is no way to move the location of the range, without ripping out counters. How can I add a exhaust fan to the range. If I add a vent above, it will be in front of the window. Do they make stoves that have a surface vent that I could vent out the back through the wall? I am open to suggestions. I have no idea how to approach this. Thanks for the help.

Several manufacturers make downdraft stoves, so there should be one that makes just a downdraft vent.

Do a search with, "downdraft vent for cooktops", Several are available. Not inexpensive, unfortunately.

We have had 2 downdraft rangetops - loved both.

Not long after DH & I got married, we remodeled our kitchen and put in a Jenn-air downdraft stove. That was '82. I loved it! When we remodeled again (I should say, "started remodeling"...giant add-on project-- not completely done yet) 5 years ago, Jenn-air had lost some of its reputation, and I went with a different brand of cooktop. The old stove is still around, in the basement as a back-up for when I'm doing extra large or elaborate dinners and I need a third stove. It still works great; once upon a time, they were excellent! As I recall, it could be vented out either the back or the side.

Now I have my cooktop separate from the ovens, in an island. One of those big ceiling hoods would have obstructed the view out the windows & cluttered things up (not saying they don't look good in some kitchens-- just not right for mine, either, Ronny) so I went with a downdraft. It's a Bosch pop-up. When I'm not using it, it's just a 2" wide solid, matching strip along the back of my cooktop. Push on the little "up/down" button, and it rises up 8" and the (adjustable speed) fan comes on. It'll fit behind a cooktop in a normal depth countertop, or you might be able to mount one alongside a range/stove.
It has a super-strong fan in the basement below, so it has a strong pull, but it stays quite quiet in the kitchen. The assembly does eat up a fair chunk of the cupboard space below the range, though.
